Fun with flintlocks!

Post by RanchRoper » Sat May 07, 2022 6:01 pm

Tried the new brass ramrod today on my Frontier Flintlock .50 cal.

Hated it! Just too heavy for me to manage.

50 yds off hand.

The 2 fliers were with the brass rod on the rifle. The 6 near and in the middle were with the lighter hickory rod under the barrel. Might stick with the new hickory one.

Hard to argue with that target. Still a beautiful target, though, RR.

It’s retired to range cleaning rod status.

Haha, thanks. I cannot believe how 1 extra pound of weight bothered me. I think I could feel it in my back and it stopped me from holding as long as I should have on the follow through. Anyhow, the new hickory rod from Track of the Wolf matches the color of the rifle, looks good and probably more true to the period of early fur trade than brass.

I had a couple of steel rods (with bore guides) that I used for cleaning and loading when I was shooting at a range with a bench for my shooting box. They would not fit on my rifle as they both have handles on one end. They do make for a lot easier/quicker loading than a wood rod but I can't imagine shooting with one on the gun, my rifle was very heavy anyway.

Great pictures and shooting. That Hudson Bay blanket fits right in.
