Airgun shooting from the kitchen

Post by North Country Gal » Mon Apr 04, 2022 1:30 pm

Since Sir Henry is shooting at his new snowy home place these days, thought I would join in the fun, doing some shooting from our likewise snowy home place. (We're about an hour away from each other in the Wisconsin north woods.)

I'm a bit more of a wimp, though. Rather than step outside, I just open our sliding kitchen door up on our elevated deck and shoot down to our range in the yard 25 yards away. In order to clear the deck railing, though, I have to shoot offhand. That's fine, because offhand is my preferred shooting position.

Here's a closeup of the range this morning.

All steel shooting, though. Just too lazy to wade through the snow to put up paper.

I did pretty good on the yellow reactive targets up out of the snow, though it took several shots on some of the paddles to free them up since they were still frozen.

I then tried some of the black animal paddle targets just peeking above the snow similar to the type of target Dave just posted about. No go, though. The paddles are stuck solidly in the snow. Even the FWB Sport air rifles (pics below) couldn't budge them.

And, of course, some of the guns - all 177 cal air guns.

Springers (915 fps)

If spring ever gets here, I may actually step outside and do some shooting. :)

Good for you Joanie. I’ve thought about shooting out of an upstairs bedroom window. I could close the door and not let a lot of heat out. It’s nice you already have spinners out. I don’t have that and am limited in what I can shoot at. Keeping mine above the snow will be my problem also.

I have no doubt you'll come up with another work of art for a shooting range with the new place, same as for the old place. Just remember to place at least some of your targets up high off the ground like I did if you plan to shoot in the winter with all our snow. In past years, I used the snow blower to keep a bath open to the backstop to put up paper targets. Just never got around to it this year.

I am thinking of setting up those animal targets with paddles up on posts for shooting next winter. Be a good summer project.

I need at least three feet under my spinners. I talked to the previous owners today and was telling her what I plan on doing and she told me where the utilities are buried. I also learned a lot about the prevailing winds. The picture of the eagle was from my back yard to her property. They now live in the house over the hill.

If was fun talking to her about the wildlife in the area. We both like coyotes. She told me stories about them catching rodents and how much she liked watching them play. I told her I wouldn’t shoot any coyotes and she really opened up to me.

We talked more about plants that would attracts bees, butterflies and birds. She planted lots already and told me where they were and what they attract. She likes that I want to continue to landscape like that and that I didn’t want my shooting to scare the birds away.

She sounds like my kind of person with the butterflies and the birds. I doubt shooting rimfire and air guns will have any effect on the birds. Sure hasn't bothered the birds around our house.

I’m finding I like shooting pellets more than rimfire. I shot rimfire once this morning and have shot pellets several time after that. I’ve never been all that great offhand and now I’m getting fairly good at it. I’m far more relaxed shooting in my backyard. It’s no big production to step outside and get a dozen shots off. Today it’s been 45 minutes is doing taxes and ten minutes of shooting. I didn’t do a lot of shoveling because it’s going to melt in a few days.

We only rarely bother to to pull out the rimfires for shooting, these days. There's really no advantage to the rimfires for our shooting even out to 50 yards, since we have air rifles that can shoot equally good or better groups at that distance and, of course, the air guns are cheaper, quieter and safer to shoot, too. Just can't bring myself to sell off our favorite rimfires, though. Just knowing we still have them and can shoot them if we want is good enough.

I sold a boatload of centerfire and rimfire so I’m down to about 20. I kept my if the SHTF centerfire and the rimfire that I enjoy the most. Right now the Avanti is what I shoot the most. My favorite Red Ryder broke plus I’m able to set spinners further out to make it more challenging. If they are so close I can hit them every time it’s not as much fun. It’s the most fun when I can hit them 70% of the time. The more I shoot the further out the targets go for that 70%.

I’ll be bringing the CO2 out soon.

I just reread your original post and looked at the pictures again. I need to clean the drool off my phone now. 😊
