On Heck Of A Day
yep, heck of a day and that's putting it mildly .... shortly after 2:30 this morning I was jolted awake by a strong pain in my right hip .... between then and 6AM I tried every thing I know to relieve the pain .... that included taking a prescription pain pill which is something I almost never do .... that was when an ambulance was called and we were on the way to an Emergency Room .... a battery of test later and it was learned I had a large kidney stone embedded in my right kidney's ureter .... that small satellite hospital doesn't have a urologist on staff so I was soon back in another ambulance headed to its major hospital in Raleigh .... from that time on, I was involved in the pre-op, operation, and post-op involved in having that kidney stone blown up with a lazier, the pieces removed and a shunt installed .... they said that a period of painful passing of bloody urine should be expected well, they were right

Re: On Heck Of A Day
Sorry for you. My left kidney was the bane of my existance when one morning when I was 17. I had some stray tissue grow around my ureter and blocked my kidney. They took me in and cut the blocked ureter and put in a plastic piece. Six months later, I was having kidney stones every 20 days. I lost that left kidney in the Summer of '81. I'm 68 now and I have only had 2 more stones since.
I hope your recovery is Speedy.

Re: On Heck Of A Day
Been there done that... I feel your pain. You may remember that right after we moved here last summer I was driving back from my daughter's in southern OK and had severe lower back pain, thinking it was from all the driving, and I had a kidney stone. I was admitted, they kept me for a week before doing surgery. The stone was too large to laser, they had to go in and remove it. I haven't had another since and HOPE I never do. They left the Stent in place for three days and told ME to pull it out myself at home. I sat in a tub filled with HOT water and pulled it. OMG, I had NO idea how LONG it was. I didn't think it would ever stop coming... I thought of those magicians pulling those colored hankies tied together out of their sleeves.
Good luck brother, get your rest, drink plenty of fluids to rinse the system. At least that's what they told me.

I don't look back at the things I can no longer do, I just look forward to the things I still can.

Re: On Heck Of A Day
Jim, I'm glad you are all right. That is a feeling I recently had also. I'm glad they were able to take care of you and send you home. Enjoy the R and R if possible.
I was told that I had a 6mm stone passing through me and if it didn't pass in two weeks, they would do what they have done with you. I looked at my metric socket set when I got home and was thinking about millimeters for two weeks. The pain subsided with a medication I don't remember. When I asked to renew it, I was told it causes severe stomach issues when taken orally. The pain went away and the stone passed the day before I met with the urologist. I attribute it to taking so much calcium to heal the broken leg.

Re: On Heck Of A Day
thankfully, the meds are kicking in .... whatever they used at the hospital to reduce pain also took away any realization that breakfast this morning marked 36 hours since I'd sat down a meal .... in fact, after this mornings small breakfast, I still don't seem to have much of an appetite .... of course, in my case that's not a bad thing

Re: On Heck Of A Day
Sorry to hear about your woes Jim. I've passed stones before and it's no fun. Never had one so large that I had to have lithotripsy.
Take care.

Re: On Heck Of A Day
my first and until yesterday only experience with kidney stones happened back in 2005 .... in thinking about it, I've pretty much decided the most logical reason is, I became too complacent .... in short, a lesson learned the hard way ... buy vinegar capsules made by a reputable source ad be very thorough in reading labels to determine how strong the capsules are .... many manufactures print their labels so the contents are difficult compare .... we have gone back to ordering what is best for us and not simply taking the cheapest bottle on the shelf

Jim, had kidney stones about ten years ago. NOT FUN! Got lucky I guess, it passed the next day. Wouldn't wish that on anybody. Damn painful.
Glad you're on the mend. Take care.

Unfortunately, it's in the small print; that keeps getting smaller and smaller over time...by design as the patient's eyes age.JEBar wrote: āThu Mar 17, 2022 7:37 pmmy first and until yesterday only experience with kidney stones happened back in 2005 .... in thinking about it, I've pretty much decided the most logical reason is, I became too complacent .... in short, a lesson learned the hard way ... buy vinegar capsules made by a reputable source ad be very thorough in reading labels to determine how strong the capsules are .... many manufactures print their labels so the contents are difficult compare .... we have gone back to ordering what is best for us and not simply taking the cheapest bottle on the shelf
