45-70 All Weather, finally got one.

Had been wanting one of these especially after I handled one at the Henry booth at the NRA convention back in May.

I already have the Henry 45-70 in the blued and walnut version. I enjoy it and have been buying up different 45-70 ammo and am thinking about rolling my own. I loved the looks of the All Weather, and if I like a certain caliber or makers gun I will usually buy more than just one.

My wife told me this morning that I should go and buy it if the gun store had one, she knew I had been thinking about it and gave me the nudge I needed. So glad she supports my gun habit.

It cycles smooth and that trigger breaks at just over 4 pounds, no creep. Wood to metal fit is very, very good. Sight cuts are clean and the sights line up. Tube has a nice snug fit and not loose at all, will break in nicely.

I love my Henrys and it will be a hard decision on which 45-70 goes out to the woods. If is raining or snowing no doubt the AW will be the one. Hope to get out to the range next weekend. Range report at that time and here are some pics.

I, too, have a wife that supports my "gathering in" of firearms from time-to-time. It sure makes the retirement hobby much more fun.

Your description of the rifle build sounds filled with the typical and expected Henry quality, and your photos reflect that. Rice Lake is doing a good job. Enjoy your new AW .45-70...looking forward to your Range Report and more pics!

nice .... very nice indeed .... if/when I should get back into hunting, our 45-70 would be among my top choices to take into the field .... under those circumstances, I'd really like to have two of them .... our current rifle is topped with a Nikon scope, I'd like to have a second with open sights .... have you given any consideration to such a thought ??

Thanks for all the comments everyone. I've been sitting in the evenings and cycling the lever every once in a while. It's so smooth. I think I will keep this one with out a scope, maybe...

Looking at it even more I can say this is a very solid and well machined lever gun. If it shoots as good as it looks then man, you couldn't slap the smile off my face.

Finally put a cartridge sleeve on it tonight. Noticed the extra marking by Henry. Those hollow ground screw drivers are a must for the slotted screws. Really like this set and they are made in the USA!

This is the best I could do at 50 yards using a rest. The one in the red sticker is a Garrett 540 Hammerhead the other are Buffalo Bore 430 grainers.

Remington 405 grainers are easy on the shoulder, even the Garrett 540 was not bad, more of a stronger shove than the Remington rounds. The Buffalo Bore had a shove and a sharp sting with them. pressing on my shoulder this morning, it's a little sore after only 20 asorted rounds. As you can see from my avatar I'm a bigger boy and as I get older I would not want to shoot a lot of the Buffalo Bore at a range visit. Hunting would be fine, the Garrett was not bad, stout but no sharpness in the felt recoil.

I will eventually roll my own for costs. Each Buffalo Bore was about $3 and the Garrett was $4 each with the Remingtons just under $2 each. Shooting the 45-70 will always put a smile on your face.
