More black powder fun today, starting to get my Frontier rifle dialed back in after a long layoff during the cold snap.

50 grains Triple 7 2fg
.490 lead ball
.010 patch (little thinner patch made it much easier to load)

50 yds, off hand....shortly after this the wind went nuts again so just rang some steel for a bit.

Always look forward to your range reports. One day you’ll have to favor us with a short video. I’d really just like to hang out with you for an afternoon on the range, but a video would do. Might learn a thing or to. But I reckon learning it and executing it are two different things.

Great shooting RR, I have a modern inline muzzle loader but seeing your posts makes me want to go 1800s just to slow down and enjoy the day. I've never fired a flint lock and thought that would be fun and challenging (and never stress about primers) as a left hander finding a wrong side rifle is difficult..

They can be had OB. There are some that come up quite frequently on the muzzleloading forum. Ive been trying to talk RR in going rock lock but hes happy where he is at and thats ok.

Have looked at several flintlocks but until the black powder availability uncertainty improves I'll stick with the percussion rifle that will shoot the subs BP. I have lots of it.

I understand. I have lots of BP come to my house I think you will see it available again soon. I havent looked for any lately so Im not sure whats out there. I know I have enough for a long time maybe longer that I will be around

The guy I bought my rifle from was a Goex dealer, so that's out the window. LGS does not have it either. Can't order online up here, and Cabelas is 3 hrs away but don't have it either most of the time.

Triple 7 I can get online and at my LGS. Gotta go with what works. Plus I have enough caps 'til my 100th birthday.

This is what tempers my urge to get back into a flintlock- sold one ~15 years ago & kinda wish I hadn't. Know there are good (some would say better) black powder manufacturers out there, but Goex going the way of the dodo has to throw a real monkey wrench into the supply situation- one I'm not sure anyone will be willing to fix given the relatively small slice of the shooting sports pie it represents.

@RanchRoper, your success with the sub powder encourages me to consider a percussion rifle instead, though building a supply of percussion caps probably isn't a walk in the park either.

As a guy who shoots offhand 95% of the time & greatly prefers it to any kind of rested shooting, I have a deep appreciation for the challenge it presents. The skill level you display is rarely attained, and speaks to both a natural talent & hard won consistency in shot execution. Much respect from Kain-tuck-ee!

Lyman Great Plains Rifle in a Flintlock is a good factory production flinter. There is nothing wrong with the Schutzen BP it works good. Caps can be found it just takes a little searching. Out where I am at Scheels seems to have caps all the time. Just thought I would throw that out at you. YMMV

@BigAl52- Have done my share of enabling, so to maintain honor I must be willing to be enabled . Thanks for the tips! Nearest Scheels is a couple states away, but it's good to hear that a supply is out there. No experience with Schuetzen or Swiss, but have heard nothing but positive comments. The Lyman rifle seems to have a really good reputation as well, though have to admit to a crush on that Frontier.

Whether I get back into it or not, it's great to see the traditional muzzleloading pastime still thriving.

Learn something every day.. Seeing posts about BP substitute in Flint lock I'm reevaluating , I had a 54 caliber percussion side lock years ago, it had a 1:48 twist that didn't shoot anything well. My inline is 1:28 and shoots sabot very well. Seems a 1:60ish twist is preferred for round ball..
