Testing new front sight on the 1873 44 carbine.

Down to the range again with that Uberti 1873 44 Carbine....I like shooting this thing! ..... to see how my new brass front sight would work and also try the MB 200 gr. bullets in 44 Special with 5 gr. Red Dot. The Special loads were intended for the 1871 Open Top revolver but shot most of those in the carbine searching for a tighter group on paper. As you can see on the target plate a large "bunny" shape cluster with the 8.5 gr Unique load from 35 yds.
The Red Dot loads always give a tighter group no matter the caliber on paper however I can still hit what I need to in solid objects with the Unique load.
The front brass sight was a great improvement with ease of sighting in a target in different lighting and had fun hitting a can from 50 yds couple times and wearing out those 3 swinging plates from 40-50 yds. That can wasn't much bigger than the front sight pin from 50 yds!

The 44 Special load using the 5 gr. of Red Dot shot well from 10 yds in the Open Top revolver when I got the trigger pull right with 3 in the red.

Think I will try 6 gr. of Red Dot in the 44 Mag brass with the same 200 gr MB bullet next time to see if that will tighten the paper group.
Might also try loads using plain lead Mat's bullet and see what that does. One good thing is that with the 12 Bhn MB Cowboy bullet the bore of rifle and revolver shot clean and I had a full can of well seasoned 44 Mag brass when the day was done!

Yep was a great day for January at 50F blue sky and plinking steel with a nice rifle. Also my side kick Ace was down there to see what all the shooting was about! Going to bring Buster down there and see how the two get along. Interesting how different powders can affect a bullets travel.

Might give that a try too. Thing is while not the tightest grouping on paper it seems to find my steel out to 50 okay.

Not finished yet. Going to load up several different bullet/powder loads in 44 Mag.

Matts Bullets 245 gr. cast RNFP with nice flat bottom with 6 gr. Red Dot and some with 9 gr. Unique.
MB 200 gr. coated Cowboy bullet with 6 gr. Red Dot and some with 9 gr. Unique

Xtreme plated 200 gr RNFP with 6 gr. Red Dot and 9 gr. Unique

240 XTP with 9 gr. Unique just for grins ! These are intended to be mild .44 Mag loads which I got this rifle for.

Maybe sometime next week or so for a range test with above rounds in the 1873 Carbine.

Well I was aiming at the red dot and that was the result and I don't think I was moving around that much!
Either the bullet/powder combo or those bullets were scared of the red dot.

Think I will cut that bunny out and mount it on the wall as some great hunting shots!

Seems the Red Dot works pretty good in your .44's. Yeah, a wall mount for the rabbit would work. .
I'll be trying my RD/.45 Colt load soon. Get to loadin' forty!
