Lesson learned

I took my Big Boy x .44 mag to the range for the first time today (First time using a lever gun). The guys at the counter noticed the Henry case and asked to check it out. This is the first time I've been to this indoor gun shop and range. They all came over to check it out. The front fiber optic sight was loose, one of them said it wasn't attached correctly and took out tools and fixed it, then offered to sight it in for me. He is a big lever gun fan and had he had it zeroed in in minutes, then said "Any problems come and get me". I loaded it and I was in heaven. Then it jammed. An unfired round wasn't loading into the chamber. It turns out I wasn't forceful enough working the lever. He said it's common for new lever gun shooters. He managed to get the round out, I thanked him and signed up for a 1 year membership.

Now that is a good reason to go back for sure. Helpful range workers can mean a lot. Glad it worked out.

Yep you have to rack that thing a bit quick but it is or should be a nice smooth action. Now how did it shoot and what ammo were you using?

Yes, I had a learning curve as well. Lever actions have to be worked with purpose! Happy shooting!

Fortyshooter, I stated it was the front sight but it was the rear sight that was loose.I asked the guy that got the round out if it could have been the ammo(Precision One), he said he owns seven lever guns and it was user error and I believe him. The other rounds were fine.

A local shop/range with good, knowledgeable folks is a great find. Hope you enjoy that X for years to come!

Yep, most of us have been there. When I first started shooting Marlin levers I learned quickly to work the lever with authority. I shoot from a bench quite a bit and lever actions are not designed for that. I find I have to lift the rifle off the bags to work the lever properly.

That’s a wonderful range you have, that is some incredible customer service. You did good by rewarding them (and you) with a membership.
