IMR 4198 powder charge ?

Howdy reloaders

New to .45-70 Gov reloading, ordered some SNS 405 RNFP .459 cast lead projectiles for my Henry H010G..... still a virgin

here's my problem,

Hodgdon Reloading data ctr (IMR4198) starting load 43gr max 46gr
Lyman 49th Edition calls for starting load 36.5gr and max 40.5gr

I'm trying to load fairly mild cartrige, is it OK to start at 36.5 gr and work up from there ?

I don't load for the 45-70, but checking a couple manuals.

Lyman Cast bullet handbook shows 31.5 to 35.0 for the 1873 Springfield, and
36.5 to 40.5 for the Win. 1886 & Marlin 1895 (only).
40.0 t0 44.5 for the Ruger # 1 & 3.

Lee manual shows no data for the IMR 4198 and the 405.

Have a small Hodgdon manual that list'
30.0 to 32.0 for Trapdoors and No other loads.

So I would think starting at 36.5 would be safe for the Henry.

hi,
previously , i use imr 4198 and lyman cast bullet 405 grain.
36.5 to 40.5 grain indicated by Lyman book, i have tested 40 without any problem in my marlin SBL 45-70

with GRT (gordon reloading tool) 40 seems perfect

Now, IMR 4198 is impossible to find in France, so i use VITHA N130 ....

GRT software looks nice, I have QuickLoad and I've been playing with different powder charges
I was able to find four pounds of IMR 4198 recently but it's hard to find powder in the US
Like I said b4 I'm gonna start low and work up the optimal load

So yesterday I was able to run to my local gun range to finally shoot my brand new Henry H010G .45-70
I was just gonna zero my red dot using a Caldwell Lead Sled and chrono (LabRadar) my handloads

Brand new Starline brass, CCI BR2, 36.5gr of IMR 4198 with SNS cast lead 405gr RNFP .459 diameter, 2540" COAL
First ten shots muzzle velo was all over the place 1509fps avg, high 1562 and low 1464
than the barrel settle down and I shot few 3 shot groups @ 50yds
first group (3shots) was 1,820" with ugly chrono #, Avg 1478, ES 31, SD 17
second group (3shots) was 1,350" Avg 1470, ES 3, SD 1.4

Here's my question, can I go bit lower with powder charge in 0.2gr increments to drop muzzle velocity to about 1300fps or should I stay with the minimum powder charge of 36.5gr
The recoil is fine and my shoulder can take the abuse since I installed the slip on LimbSaver

Do you have any Unique or Universal Clays by chance? Xmp 5744 is another good one

I do have Unique so I'm gonna try it and I think Longshot is ok in .45-70
I've been looking for Blue Dot with no luck

I have other powders I use in my benchrest guns and shotgun
