Back then in 1944 it was Thanksgiving day. A little family history of that day, from my Mother.
"The day you were born. That day was Thanksgiving in 1944 and World War 2 was going on. Your Uncle Dale had been sent home on medical leave with malaria he had contracted while in Guadalcanal and Tarawa with the Marines. Uncle Ken was Navy and stationed in Seattle so he, too, was able to be home for TG dinner. Uncle Bob was Merchant Marine and also home. Uncle Jim was too young to be in the military so we were all gathered at your Grandma’s…except your dad. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor where he ran a rescue and recovery boat for downed pilots."
Uncle Jim was also a Marine, but served in Korea at the Chosin Reservoir. He's still with us but in his 90's now. This family history had a lot to do with me joining the Marines, instead of one of the other branches. In a way, I've been a Marine since the day I was born and I'll be one till the day I die.
Y'all have a glorious Thanksgiving, and remember those who were fighting and dying on foreign soil on many Thanksgiving holidays throughout the years.
