Re: 405 cast bullet load
Hey Stets, check out the "What did you do at your reloading bench today" thread. We had a discussion about 45/70 loads.

Re: 405 cast bullet load
What will you be using it for? If just plinking I really like 13-14 gr. of Unique. Next level up would be IMR 3031 in the 40 gr. range following the load data for it. Unique works well in my 1895 Marlin and mild enough to shoot all day.

Re: 405 cast bullet load
Is it position sensitive? Did you use any type of filler under the bullet? I just bought a pound of it to load some 12 ga slugs, but may divert some to the rifle

Re: 405 cast bullet load
Ive never used any filler of any kind in any load I have ever done. Im not sure about position sensitive it didnt act like it to me. Burn chart Unique and Universal clays are about the same. Id start lower and work up to the 16 grain load. XMP 5744 is also a good powder for reduced loads in 45-70 and it is not position sensitive

Re: 405 cast bullet load
Stets, Sorry for not replying earlier. Before Henry introduced their rifle in .45-70, I had purchased a .45-70 Marlin Model 1995 CB; that's the one with the 26" barrel and the full-length tube magazine. I bought the rifle for Maine moose, but I have yet to win a moose permit in Maine's annual lottery. I tried several powders with Oregon Trail's 405 gr, gas checked, hard cast lead bullets with the goal of shooting 3" groups at 150 yds. 35 grs. of IMR 4198 has delivered the best results. Depending on weather conditions and my steadiness, I generally shoot 3"-4" groups. However, I had to mount a Leupold VX-2 scope to do this. Beyond 75 yds, my eyes are not good enough to use the factory Marble buckhorn open sight.
