Wow that was lucky him not getting hit by the pieces.. It all went upward.
Jacob didn’t recall which powder the .44 Magnum was loaded with, but remembered that his original load data was to use 11 grains of powder.
His original load might have used Unique. Guys used to experiment with duplex loads of their own concoction and get similar results sometimes. I reloaded for 20 years and always knew what powder and how much, primer, crimp and bullet of the loads I was using.
I liked IMR 4227 in my .44s. Never mixing powders, I loaded from the manual.

11 grs. of something? I always write my load data down in my book and go by the load manual. Whatever powder I'm using at the time I label the cap
on the powder hopper and of course clean the hopper after each use. Then the loaded ammo box gets a label with caliber....bullet description and powder used with gr. amount.

The S&W 29 series revolvers are not nearly as strong as more beefy designs like a Super Redhawk or Raging Hunter. But a bomb is a bomb..... the bottom line is, maybe it would not have mattered here.

This is just a reminder that this could happen to any of us reloaders. One careless moment or distraction while reloading and this can be the result. We all could speculate the cause of this kaboom, but that's not the point. The point is every time we sit down to reload, our full attention is required to the task at hand - nothing less.

Not a reason to be complacent when reloading, but all of the kabooms I have seen have not resulted in any major injuries to the shooter. Most modern handguns are well designed to fail in such a way as to protect the shooter.

I did see the aftermath of a shotgun kaboom that resulted in some very serious injuries requiring numerous surgeries, and permanent consequences.

Each box I load has data on stick on label on top. NEVER EVER try to just remember what you used.

Like others mentioned I mark all my loads, make id cards before i make the first bullet. Bullet, powder and charge, date made and how many in container.

I'm right there with that. I note everything when loading. When I handload, I DO NOT want to be bothered. Don't need that to happen.

And it can happen to the most experienced reloader. A friend of ours who has been reloading all his life got called away on a phone call while reloading and accidentally loaded a double charge when he returned. Ruined one of his pet rifles when he went to shoot a few days later, though, fortunately, he was not injured.
