Hello from the land of the big moose/elk

Post by Mgr2 » Mon Sep 19, 2016 3:09 am

Hi all.

Greetings from Norway, the land of the big moose, or elg (elk) as we call them here. Thanks for letting me join the forum. I have just purchased a lovely new Henry BBS in .357 mag. Pics will follow soon :-).

The Henry will of course not be used for elks :-), mostly for recreational shooting at the range, but I plan to join a hunt for one of the small Scandinavian deer spieces (Capreolus capreolus) here in November. The .357 magnum round is marginal for hunting, and here the law says that only munition with an expanding bullet and energy at least 980 joule (722 lbf) at 100 meters (109 yds) can be used for the smallest deers. Only hot .357 loads will manage that according to reports on the net. I'll try to find some Hornady XTP 158 grain ammo and check it out at the range. Ammo shortage here in Norway these days, and it is expensive when you get hold of some.

One other motivation to buy this rifle was to introduce rifle shooting to my boy (he is eleven). He is lefthanded, and I am righthanded, so a lever action will suit us both. Also the .357 recoil should not be too intimidating to him.

Regards,
Michael

Welcome, Michael, from the Show-Me-State!

Great choice in getting the Henry BBS in .357 magnum caliber. I've had two Big Boys --- that .357 model and the .357 Big Boy Brass. The .357 is an excellent round to shoot.

It was cool to read your hunting plans, and interesting also to read about the legal (law) requirement:
"...only munition with an expanding bullet and energy at least 980 joule (722 lbf) at 100 meters (109 yds) can be used for the smallest deers."
I have shot the Hornady rounds you mentioned, both out of the Henry BBB, and my .357 Ruger revolver with 4" barrel. I've not read about the ft-lbs energy out of a rifle; but I focused on the stats for shooting a revolver. Here in Missouri it is legal to hunt whitetail deer with a .357 magnum handgun, and I would hunt whitetail with my revolver. These are the stats I found on the Hornady web site for this ammo, shot out of a handgun. I believe that the velocity and ft-lbs would be stronger out of the Henry:

Test Barrel (8 V") Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)
Muzzle: 1250/548 50 yds: 1150/464 100 yds: 1073/404

Another ammo you might consider, which I would also use to hunt whitetail with my revolver, is the Black Hills 158 Gr. Jacketed Hollow Point. I know that the Hornday .357 XTP is quite accurate. I also like the BHA for its accuracy. This ammo brand has similar muzzle stats as does the Hornady: Velocity: 1250 FPS Energy: 548 Ft. Lbs.

Not least, it was enjoyable to read your plans to intro shooting to your son. That's great, and for him to shoot a quality Henry rifle will be a great start! Enjoy, and I along with other Henry folk will look forward to your hunting report.

Welcome from Indiana, Michael. Congratulations on the Henry Big Boy .357 and good luck on your hunt. It is great that you will be teaching your son to shoot. Best wishes to both of you as you share that experience.

First, welcome. I always like hearing from folks in other countries. I had the opportunity to visit many other countries when I was in the Air Force Reserves. Unfortunately, I never made it to yours.

Something you need to consider when looking at the energy provided by your .357. With .357 magnum, the muzzle velocity listed is normally for revolver length barrels. You will usually get a substantial increase in velocity when shooting from a rifle. The American Eagle 158 grain soft point ammo is listed as 1240 fps muzzle velocity on the box. I tested it at the range with my friend's chronograph out of a Henry Big Boy Steel with a 20" barrel. I got 1800 fps from it. I looked up the ballistic coefficient for a Speer 158 grain jacketed soft point and got .163. Using a ballistic calculator, I found that even at 2000 fps there is enough energy to meet your criteria at 100 yds. Here is a link to data from Buffalo Bore which includes data for 18.5 inch barrels. Their 158 grain soft points are 2153 fps from the muzzle. The ballistic calculator gives 1010 foot pounds at 100 yds.

https://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l ... tail&p=102

Their stuff is HOT. Still, many other brands will give you substantially more velocity from rifle length barrels.

Hope this helps.

FWIW, I hunt feral hogs and whitetail deer with my .357 Henry. I feel it is up to the task. I wouldn't try it on a moose, but we don't have them around here. The deer are normally under 150 lbs.

Welcome to the forum. Your .357 Big Boy will suit both of your needs and don't forget you can shoot 38 Special in it too.

Hi all, and thanks for the welcome!

As for the hunting and firearms regulations in Norway, these are very strict. Potential hunters have to participate in a four-week hunting course, two nights a week, including some practical shooting with rifle and shotgun, then take a 50-question exam. If you pass the exam, and did not miss any of the lections, you may apply for a hunting permit from the government. You may then apply for a hunting rifle (or shotgun) permit at your local police station. This application takes around three weeks. The police does a background check, and if the applicant has a criminal record or has a history of drug/alcohol abuse the application will be denied. The application is for one spesific caliber only, and automatic weapons are not allowed. There are also restrictions for semi-autos and carbines. You may own a maximum of 6 firearms.

Handguns are a completely different matter. You must be active member of a handgun club at least 6 months, then get a signed verification from the club that you have participated in organized shooting events. The background checks are even stricter. Handguns are not allowed for hunting.

No guns are allowed for selv defense, nor tasers or mace spray (these are banned) or knives. There are very strict regulations for storage of weapons and ammunition in your house. Carrying firearms (or knives) on your person in public is a criminal offense. Firearms cannot be left in your car, without removing vital parts. Firearms must be hidden in the boot/back of your car, under a tarp, when traveling. Not an easy life for hunters or recreational shooters here :-|.

Thre are also strict regulations for what you can shoot with what caliber:

For moose, deer, fallow deer, reindeer, wild boar, sheep, musk or wolves and bears, ammunition with expanding bullets weighing a minimum 9 grams (138.9 grain) and with the following impact energy:
a) For ammunition with a bullet weight between 9 grams (138.9 grain) and 10 grams (154 grain) impact energy must be at least 2700 Joules (275 kgm) measured at 100 meters distance.
b) For ammunition with a bullet weight of 10 grams or more impact energy must be at least 2200 joules (225 kgm) measured at 100 meters distance.
c) When hunting with rifle, small deer, beaver and lynx or felling of wolverine expanding bullets with an impact energy of at least 980 joules (100 kgm) measured at 100 meters distance.

The .357 magnum, in a 20" barrel, will according to articles on the net just creep above the last requirement, in the hottest loads. Unfortunately hunting ammo in .357 magnum is limited here, and we don't have the Buffalo Bore brand. Hornady could be specially ordered, and I have hopes for their 158 grain XTP load.

Reloading is allowed, and I have reloading equipment but am not an experienced reloader, so I may come back to the forum for advice at a later stage :-).

Deer/moose hunters must have (or have a signed agreement for) a hunting dog. If an animal is wounded you have to call the dog owner and with him pursue the animal until you find it and can put it down.

There are some positive things about hunting and outdoor life in Norway as well though :-). Everybody has the right to travel/roam (or camp) on all land within Norway, no matter who owns it: http://www.miljodirektoratet.no/en/Area ... t-to-Roam/

Also hunting is open to all citizens, once they have met the requirements. Not like in central Europe where it is an activity for the select few.

Very interesting, especially the part about being able to hunt all open land.

What types of handguns are legal to purchase once licensed? Can you buy a semi auto like a Glock?
