Any thoughts on the prop gun incident?

Post by fortyshooter » Mon Oct 25, 2021 6:52 pm

Latest I heard/read was that a couple of stage hands had the gun out plinking in the desert the evening before filming and it was returned with a couple live rounds. Revolver wasn't fully checked before the next use. 45 Colt you think? If blanks are used the case has a wad in the end and possibly a full wadcutter got in there from the "plinkers" ?

that's one of those things that there is no way it should happen .... somewhere along the way safety protocols weren't followed

The reports I heard said Baldwin was told he had a Cold Gun, meaning safe, just before they started the rehearsal. The guns are supposed to be verified by at least two armorer crew members prior to being handled. It's all rumor until it's given under oath...

... But the first crew had quit due to unsafe conditions on set, including failure to hold the normal daily pre-shooting (pre-filming) safety briefings, unsafe handling of weapons and pyrotechnics, and more.

A less qualified crew was in place.

Being a revolver very simple to check the load.

Yup, but if the person in charge is bullying you and you don't stand up to them...

I taught firearms, and had supervisors try to rush the training. Didn't happen.
I finally resigned when a new chief started cutting training in ALL aspects.

Very sad mistake that resulted in the loss of life. What I have a problem with is the reference to a "prop" gun. Prop guns do not fire projectiles that result in the loss of life. This was a real gun and needs to be referred to as such and handled and treated accordingly. Someone was grossly negligent here and needs to answer for it.

Just read that some cast members were using live ammo with the gun on their breaks, shooting for fun. That would be a major violation of the safety protocol of having no live ammo on the set.

Anyone handling a firearm has a responsibility to prove it safe. The buck stops with Baldwin.

Yeah, but I'll wait till the movie comes out. Not "Rust" - the one that will be made about this incident.

Anti gunners know Jack squat about firearms and there safe handling and inspection before firing it at a beating heart, that's exactly what happened

I don't have a link, but on another forum the assumption was that this was a .44 special single action revolver. The latest info released says that they were rehearsing a scene and had to have the cinematographer there to reposition the camera and check angles due to shadows. Baldwin was supposed to point the gun at the camera. The gun then "went off". Obviously, Baldwin had to pull the hammer back and pull the trigger for this to happen.

He was reportedly told it was a "cold gun" when he was given it. Another wrinkle of responsibility is that Baldwin was one of the producers.

Slightly off topic and hopefully not political but my wife was telling me that she read a story that’s related. Sorry, no link available. She said that some years ago there was an accidental shooting causing death by a police officer. Apparently Baldwin came out publicly criticizing the fact. Not surprising as he has been a total chump forever.

We'll have to wait until the final story evolves but will it be the truth? A lot of speculation going on but the fact remains someone didn't do their job correctly.

Every single person who handled that firearm should have checked to see if it was loaded. Ultimately, Baldwin had a responsibility to safety check the weapon. I also agree that this was not a "prop gun". A prop gun would not be able to be fired. This was a real fire arm. This is a case of extreme negligence. Also, you should never point a firearm at a person unless you are defending yourself from deadly force. If Baldwin (an anti-2A idiot) had known and followed the four pillars of gun safety this would never have happened. He is responsible.

As has been stated, NO firearm safety protocol was followed. The gun was in Baldwin's hand. He was the last link.
