Really big polar bear
This came from a 1962 issue of Guns magazine. They do not mention if a howitzer was used to take it.

One of the worlds top predators. A pure meat eater - if it moves it's food.
My father bagged one back in the mid 50's - not quite that big tho. Still took a half dozen .30-06 shots to take it down and it skidded to a stop about 10ft from him.

Yup, black bears and grizzlies might eat you depending on the day and perceived threat level.
But your are nothing but lunch to a polar bear.

Definitely NOT that cute cuddly critter certain folks are worried about. A comparison of various claws, including the PB. PB claws avg about 3.5" long, and evolved to give excellent traction on ice.RanchRoper wrote: ↑Wed Oct 13, 2021 1:17 pmYup, black bears and grizzlies might eat you depending on the day and perceived threat level.

I'd want nothing less than our 45-70 firing fully packed 400+ gr'ers
Re: Really big polar bear
The Great White Bear can hit 25mph at full run, and keep it up for a mile or so. If he starts charging you from 100meters away, you've got about 11 sec to take him down before he rips your head off. Better be really good with that .45-70 - or anything else. Or have somebody slower than you at your side.

Re: Really big polar bear
a Polar Bear is a totally different critter, I certainly wouldn't want to ever meet one in the wild .... years ago, I literally shot a black bear that was less than 6" from the muzzle of my Ruger Blackhawk 44 Mag .... the blast literally powder burned him .... that time went well, hope to never have another such experience ....

Re: Really big polar bear
The area we lived in while in VA was called Bear Creek. The first month we were in the new house, right about dusk, a large black bear came to visit. Miss T, who had been sitting on the deck, went inside. She called the game warden, who asked if the bear was about eight or nine hundred pounds with silver hair on his back? Yup...
He's just making his rounds. As long as you leave nothing out for him at your place, he won't add you to the list. We were careful, not putting up bird feeders, salt licks, corn for deer, etc.
We saw a number of bears over the years, "Just passing through.". Gave them room.

You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.
I don't look back at the things I can no longer do, I just look forward to the things I still can.
