Primer Options

Has anyone used CCI 34 primers to reload 45-70? I'm out of CCI 200 but have a few of these 7.62 x 51 M14/M1A type primers left and was wondering if these could be substituted in a pinch. I'm not eager to do this but finding large rifle primers is fruitless for who knows how much longer. If anyone as done this please share your experience.

I feel your primer pain. I finally scored a brick of small pistol mag from Midway and UPS just told be they damaged the package and its not coming. Of course there is no replacement !

The military primers should work just fine as the only difference that I’m aware of is the military primers have a thicker cup. This helps prevent slam fires in M1A rifles with the floating firing pin. Only problem I could imagine is if your 45/70 has a light striking pin you might not get detonation.

However, I have no personal experience using the military in place of commercial primers. I do use them for my M1A loads.

What has me spooked is exactly what you describe, i.e. the occasional light strike resulting in a FTF. It may be better to just wait it out. Hopefully some large rifle will show up.

I've used 34s in 30-30 and 30-06 with no issues, I did load a blank and test fired before building an actual cartridge. Also the 7.62 NATO cartridge using 34s has been fired in countless 308 bolt guns.. load'em is my vote

They're fine. They're just a bit harder to prevent accidental discharge but other than that are "large rifle" primers. This was all they had at our LGS for a while and we used them fine loading .308's with them. I think I even loaded some .270 and 25-06. All of them went "bang" and the bullet hit the target.
