9/11 Memorial: "“Rendering the Unthinkable"

15 years since this unbelievable tragedy!

For those who live near New York and can get to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, a new exhibition will be displayed this month.
It's titled: "“Rendering the Unthinkable: Artists Respond to 9/11.” Here is a brief description page of some of the renderings.

Grateful for these talented folk and their efforts to help us never to forget 9/11 -- to remember those who were lost, and their families who so terribly suffered then and even now.

I can't watch the news this am w/reading of the names. It chokes me up in 10 min.
A friend of mine's family once owned the land in Shanksville Pa. where the plane crashed !

I can easily understand forgetting, for instance, Pearl Harbor because it was so long ago. That generation is rapidly dwindling and passing away. But the 9/11 national tragedy is just a short time span of 15 years ago, and hard to imagine folk already forgetting about it.

Maybe I'm just getting cynical in my old age, and more people than I think actually do take the time to stop and remember. Probably just too painful for some.

I'm old enough to remember where I was when Kennedy was assassinated and where I was on 9-11......
With JFK, I remember being sent home from elementary school and walking into my house and seeing my mom
crying on the couch watching tv. On 9-11, my plane had just taken off for Memphis and we had the news on...live
coverage when the second plane hit....we couldn't believe what we just saw!

Interesting story, ace. I'm certain there are other Henry folk that have specific memories of that day, and many stories could be written.

I've watched very little of the historical stuff today about 9/11; over the years have watched a lot!! But your short story and a special I'm watching this evening reminded me of one connection I experienced re. 9/11. I was working at a university in northern IL at the time of 9/11, which was comprised of an undergrad college, and master's school, and a E-Free seminary. I learned pretty quickly through our university reporting that Todd Beamer, the fellow on flight 93 well known for the phrase "Let's Roll!" was affiliated with our university some years previous to 9/11. I believe that was through his attending Wheaton College. My university and Wheaton did a lot of collaborative education/teaching. So there were a number of people who knew him and his wife, Lisa. It was a terrible way to highlight parts of his/their lives in our college news articles.

Second memory for me was my meeting with my supervisor the week after 9/11. He had a wall calendar dedicated to the history and building of the Twin Towers on his wall (generally he was an ardent history buff). Just four weeks prior to 9/11, he was at the top of the Twin Towers for a breakfast work meeting, and enjoyed the tremendous view that tall building afforded to him. Our conversation that day did not center very much on our work; rather, he shared his thoughts on the close time frame that he visited there, as well as how incredibly sad this tragedy was. Like I said, there are myriad stories.

I'll sign off on this post, and on 9/11 for this year. But again, I appreciated the title these artists have come up with for their memorial artwork: "Rendering the Unthinkable." It's a pretty accurate phrase of that day.

I will never forget. I was off that day from work and watched it unfold all day on the news. I held my wife extra tight and close that night. There are individuals out there who would love to make a bigger 911 against this country. I hope if they try they are cut down like the filthy vermin they are and may they burn in hell. That's all I can say about that on this forum. God Bless the victims of that day, God bless their families and God bless America.

I too will never forget. I was at work in Chrysler dealer and someone said a plane hit the tower and I went into showroom and saw the second plane hit
And I saw it all day for days after. I just heard "dust lady" just died from cancer at 43.

I'll also never forget.

But, without going into politics, the way society is acting today, I can see why there is wide spread belief that many have forgotten. Either that or just don't want to remember.

It's hard enough for us, but it must be real hard for those who were involved or connected to it.

I remember where I was that day, working a rare day patrol. I had stopped in to dispatch, and saw the first tower burning on the news channel that played constantly in dispatch, the only channel they were allowed to have on... I walked down to the hall to get the Chief, and as we walked back into dispatch, the second plane struck, live.

Things went downhill fast for us then. We called in half the off duty officers and put the others on alert, and increased the protection of the county offices in case there might be some plans to strike nation wide. We kept the beefed up security in place for over a month, and afterward, the county was never really wide open again. Was anything?

I worked at a university that day. Everything came to a standstill after the first plane hit as the whole community gathered around the nearest television and watched the second plane hit and then the towers collapse on live TV. Heartbreak.

We watched the events of that day on TV in total disbelief. How could such a thing be possible? Unfortunately, some of the stories that have come out since that sad event make for really uncomfortable reading.

The truth will never be revealed, and the pain of the families involved will never diminish. I would love to think that such an event could never happen again, but .................
