Got to the range this morning to shoot my new to me Ruger Police Service Six 357 revolver for the first time. Wanted to also compare shooting it to my S&W Model 66. Both 4 inch barrels and both about same year built....late 1976 to early 1977.
The 66 has the larger target grips and fills the hand nice while I had a little concern of the slim grips on the Ruger when shooting Magnum loads.
Was surprised to find the Service Six was very comfortable to shoot my Magnum loads!
Had 2 targets setup one for each revolver and shooting distance was set at 10 yds. First shots for both were my 38 Special 158 gr RNFP MB bullets with 5.6 Power Pistol. 2nd round on target was the .357 Mag 158 gr. XTP HP with a lower level Magnum load of 13.6 of Alliant 2400.
A 3rd load was the .38 Special +P FBI load using the Rim Rock 158 SWC HP with 6.3 gr. Power Pistol and was only shot out of the Ruger Service Six with 3 shots in center of target. Wrapped it up with 4 quick DA shots from the Ruger with a two hand hold from 10 yds. Load was a 357 Mag 125 gr. plated Xterme Bullet load using 7 gr. Unique at the top of target. Not bad!
Happy with the way the Police Special Service revolver shot and handled and also had some fun hitting the plate targets from 25 yds.
Nice shooter it is and compared well with the S&W 66.
Now should I send the well worn Service Six back to Ruger for a re-bluing job or leave it as is? All the blue is gone on the back strap from handling.
Guess who just had a birthday? We did. Henry Rifle Forums has made it to the 10 year mark. Thank you to all members, I'm glad you are here!

Nicely done, forty. If the Ruger is in otherwise decent shape and you want to re-blue it, having Ruger do it is the way to go as far as maintaining value. I have friends who had Ruger do some of their vintage Rugers and Ruger did a great job.

Let the experts have a go . Send it in to Ruger to get it re-blued. I would ask before sending it in how long is turn around time.

I just might leave that Ruger as is. It has a history you may never know, but the finish wear tells of a lot of use. It gives it character and class that takes time to develop.
