CUT THE GRASS !!!!

Post by fortyshooter » Mon Jun 21, 2021 9:51 am

Reached my limit this morning during our walk.

We live in an older but well kept subdivision. 2 homes across from each other on a corner seem to have issues getting the grass cut....talking 14-24 inches tall here. One home has been empty for a long while and eventually the owners get it cut after the city fines them. It was just sold to new owners recently and that will hopefully take care of that.

Now the other home is owned by a late 30's couple with two small kids and no grass has been mowed there in months.
The grass in the yard and now in the street gutters is 2 ft. high!! Residents around the neighborhood have complained to the city and the "Code Enforcer" has left tickets. I had called and the city says they have to go thru steps to sending a letter stating if grass isn't cut by some point they will do it for you at $130 bucks. I would make it $250!

So while we were doing our morning walk I come around that corner. The grass still growing and the other house across had the grass cut 2 days ago.
Both new cars in their driveway and I yell " CUT THE GRASS". :x As we walk by the guy comes out with his toddler child walking to the car and from our distance I yell LAWN MOWER along with a mower pushing gesture. He just stops in his tracks and looks.

If you can't afford a 200 buck lawn mower to cut it yourself or pay to have a lawn service do it.....you don't need a home but maybe an apartment or buy a town house with maintenence included. Don't make the area look crappy! The young couple that live next door to him keep their place very neat but he told me last week he has bought a place in the country and will be selling the home.

Just reached my limit this morning!!

I live out in the woods as you know, so nobody but me to complain about my grass. But I keep it cut fairly short anyway, because I don't like ticks, chiggers, and the occasional venomous snake. And it's easier to find spent brass. :D

I have at least 2 acre's worth, maybe more. House area, barn areas, and around former milk parlor and silage pits. I keep it all mowed regularly, plus a half mile plus of road frontage. Even when I was dairy farming and had little time, I kept it all nice and mowed. No excuse for your neighbor not to mow.

I hear you. Sometimes it just gets to be too much. We live on the north slope of a ridge and we have
neighbors downhill from us. Of course water flows downhill when it rains and the woman seems to think
I can stop it. Her property floods from time to time when we get a heavy rain. I feel for her, but there
is nothing I can do.
She brought out the State Conservation Officer one day and I went to meet them as they
walked my property. He finally told her in my presence that indeed, "water flows down hill".
I guess she feels I'm that neighbor that doesn't care.

What the hell happened to “pride of ownership:” At the risk of sounding like Clint Eastwood in that ‘get off my lawn movie”, I really think today’s younger generation just do not give a dang! Seems like if it’s not on a computer or phone then it doesn’t matter. Sorry, and yes, I have become my father.

I was at my 36 year old son’s house yesterday and while the lawn was mowed it was getting very brown. I didn’t say anything but I wanted to suggest to him that maybe he should water a bit more. And yes, he has an automatic sprinkler system.

when it comes to such maters, we don't live in a setting where a property owners association or any branch of local government can run our lives .... we also have a neighbor who is pretty lax when it comes to mowing his grass .... eventually he comes around and takes care of it

This is just a typical .3 acre corner lot. No homeowners association here but it just looks trashy and can be a hazard with street drainage with grass 2 ft. high growing thick in the curbing gutter too. Don't think the little kids ever get out in the yard.

I used to be one of the zoning enforcement folks. We got a bad rap from a few people, but most folks secretly liked having us in their neighborhoods. High grass not only looks bad, but provides habitat for rats and other unwanted things like snakes and vermin.

As others will agree, one trashy house, can bring down the block. We covered grass, trash and debris, inoperable vehicles, hoarding (really sad at times), unsafe structures (working with building inspections), and more. We also coordinated community cleanups, working with church groups, neighborhood watch, or block organizations. Makes a big difference. I often spoke at neighborhood meetings. We worked WITH people long before we wrote summons or fines.

Where I used to live in Northern Virginia they had an HOA which I really was never a member of. Anyway I got
a letter one day that my TV antennae was ten inches too tall by their standards. (How did they know that?)
So I got up on my roof and measured and guess what, it was. (Were they actually on my roof when I was gone?)
I wrote a nice letter saying I would lower it. (I didn't.) Anyway that satisfied them.
Later I got a nice letter asking me to speak at their garden club meeting about my wonderful landscaping. ME?
All I did was plant some flowers. Anyway, I had to work at that time.

Got no use for an HOA or anything even remotely similar. I don't like to be told what I must do or can't do on my property. Which is why I live where I do.

We lived way out in the country where it's easier to do whatever you want. But the county where I worked I responded to complaints, and most were valid.

"We have rats the size of our small dog coming from next door."
Find they are piling trash bags in the back yard rather than taking them to the dump or paying for weekly pickup.

"My neighbor has a junkyard in his backyard, we try and keep our place nice, but..."

Six inoperable vehicles that he is using (has been planning to use,) for parts for number seven. For a decade, according to his wife. In talking with him, he admits he just doesn't have the time, and agrees to donate them, pleasing the wife and kids, and the neighbors.

On the other hand, another fella IS working on a classic Mach 1, and only has to keep it covered when he isn't working on it. Car cover, tarp... Or fence to shield it from public view. Everyone wins.

Some folks, like the elderly, we hook up with volunteer groups. Others we give the nudge they need to take care of the problems. Few had to go to court or pay fines. Most were out of town landlords or abandoned properties.

The world is full of ALL types of people. Ummm, about two out of three of them are are afflicted by dimwittedness, or, they are just straightv out crazy fools and nut jobs,.... ( most likely they would have the same opinion about me) .... people create and instigate most of the irritants and trouble we endure in life. I understand the "no man is an island" concept, .... that we are dependant on each other for the life we enjoy... we need the interconnected work/skills/efforts of others to have the stuff and life we enjoy.... however, the more neighbors you have the more irration you are going to endure, ( another opinion) .... (for example,, my old English teachers would be extremely irritated by how I write, and my punctuation "pattern" 🤪) I have observed that there appears to be a direct relationship between the number of people and the number of rules(laws) one needs to keep war and murder levels in check. One person can do as he pleases and no complaints... two people and a few simple ground rules improve harmony and interaction.... a Zillion people and you end up buried in a zillion laws.... people in densely clogged cities depend on lots of laws to keep their overbearing nitwit neighbors from making their lives unbearable so they don't understand their rural neighbors wanting to live in a "vacuum" void of that controlling safety net.... rural people don't get why the metropolitan areas want to be stupidly chained down by a mountain of laws telling them how to live... and so the two worlds drift farther apart... thats almost becoming a political comment so I shall stop blabbing...
The orginal thought, (before I ran off the rails), was there are lots of people in the world ,and , (with my hermit like attitude), most of them annoy me. So says me . Happy to be sitting in the quiet of my comfy little house on the hill suppin coffee...with zero number of close neighbors...have a good day folks...off in your own space...🤪🤪🤪😉😉😉😉

As the old saying goes, "We live so far back in the woods they have to pipe in sunlight", and we love it.
Even so the Township board, (mostly females who moved out here to escape the suburbs), think I should
get a permit to cut down a dead tree. TIMBER! Not getting no stinking permit.😂
I literally have a thousand trees. They used to pass by our property in boats inspecting. I let the brush
grow up and they can't even see us anymore.👀 😁

There is a huge difference when you live where we do, in Oklahoma, in an AG community. Our neighbor to the left is a sixty acre hay field. Across the street, two hundred acres of wooded timber. To the right is another pair of hobby farms, twenty and forty acres, and behind us... You guessed it, cows, hay, and wooded lot. Very quiet. Mostly all we hear at night are the coyotes. We can do what we like, but... We keep the place up, how we were raised.

In the city, or suburbs, your actions, affect those all around you.
Years ago, we had a neighbor on a half acre lot. Had a kennel with eight beagles in it. Rarely cleaned the kennel. Try cooking out on your deck if the wind blows the wrong way...

Yeah well, the farmer a half mile up the road has over a hundred dairy cows. They use a wash down milking parlor where all
the manure flows into a pit. Then they pump it out and spray it on the fields. No amount of trees can filter that out.
Well, it's the country after all. Could be worse. Hogs or chickens are a lot worse than cattle.😣

In VA they often spray fields with waste, even human waste, and one section of I64 west of Richmond the State Police got calls for a week about a suspected body along the interstate from that smell. Yeah, not all AG smells are great. I'll give you that one. ;)

I ride a bike about 120 miles a week along a river trail in the north part of the city that goes out in the country along the river to a town north and west of where I live. There are portable toilets in certain places along this trail. Usually in a parking lot. Got off my bike to use one the other day opened the door and someone had set off one of those ground to air exploding fireworks inside of one. Why is it necessary to destroy something that isnt yours?
