Wolf Creek, MT
A lot has been happening since I was last posting daily. We can’t talk politics here so all I can say is I’m tired of living in a place where my political views are a minority. I don’t want to live where any one party has a overwhelming majority. I have found places that are heavy red or blue and I don’t care for the extremes
So I’m moving to a purple place. I’ve done a lot of research and have found Wolf Creek, MT to be that place. It’s a small unincorporated town that I have visited many times and have camped below the dam.
Housing is limited and I might not find the perfect place there so will broaden my search to homes along I-15 between Helena and Great Falls.
I suspect I might not post much for a few months and wanted to let people know the reason. I suspect I’ll be posting in spurts. Maybe a dozen posts in a few days then nothing for weeks.
This forum is like family and I feel closer to the members here than my own neighbors.

Sounds very upsetting to so quickly uproot and relocate especially after all the work to have done with your home. Hope you find a place that fits better and you can make it yours soon. Good luck with the search and please keep us posted.

Can’t agree more with Roper.
That’s a pretty radical decision considering the amount of work you have put into your place. Personally I applaud your decision and taking the political climate completely out of your decision just the reduction in people and traffic would have to be appealing.
Having just returned from nine days in Montana in addition to spending a lifetime of visiting the state your choice is tops!

We spend a good bit of time in Wolf Creek, Wyoming.

With a name like Wolf Creek there could be a werewolf problem but that’s minor compared to politics.

Heck dig up your current dwelling and flatbed it out to the wide open spaces! You certainly have a nice setup now.
Around here I'm in the same situation with Va. but no plans to move.

Gene, when I was researching places to retire, I used citydata.com. It's a good resource that covers all the boxes as far as climate, politics, crime, health care facilities and so on. At our age, good health care facilities were one of our biggest concerns, so even though our town is only 8000 as far as population, it has excellent medical facilities.

Heck of a decision Gene, but, I applaud it. That takes commitment. That's a darn nice area you're looking at. Cascade ain't a bad place either.
Good luck in your search.

Re: Wolf Creek, MT
I witnessed a neighbor shoot a rabbit from 20-25 yards with a .17 pellet rifle. He aimed at center of mass which was muscle and bone. Of course he only wounded it so he reloaded and ran after it wounding it even more. Reloaded and did it repeatedly. Finally it was wounded enough for him to walk up to and hold it down with his foot so he could shoot it in the head and oops I’m out of ammo.
Other neighbors are aware he does this and look the other way because he is the popular guy in the neighborhood. I reported him to Fish and Wildlife. They weren’t doing anything so I called PETA.
I came to the realization I live in a neighborhood of spineless cowards and told them so. Needless to say I’m not very popular.
In the meantime I’m told my range is illegal and when I proved it was legal they shunned me even more for proving them wrong.
So I’m going to take the $1.2M and run. I can buy this same home in Great Falls for $400,000. Maybe buy a $200K motor home and tour America.

I need to live near a VA Hospital. I hear Helena has one. I’m going to take a trip and visit it if I can. I’ll check out citydata.North Country Gal wrote: ↑Sun Jun 20, 2021 10:44 amGene, when I was researching places to retire, I used citydata.com. My friend in the Army has done thousands of hours of research on areas because the Army moves him around yet in his 17 years in the Army they have always sent him where he wanted to go.
Income, crime, poverty levels, healthcare and laws are my top priorities.

Re: Wolf Creek, MT
That's awful. If the guy is going to use an air gun to kill rabbits he should at least learn to do it right. With air guns, its head shot or heart/lungs, period, and preferably head shots. Done that way, even a low power airgun will make humane kills. This isn't rocket science or something that's a big secret. Shame on him for doing a body mass shot.
I do understand; neighbors are so important. We know all our neighbors and are on good terms with them all.

Go for it Gene! 1.2 million will go a long way to a happy place to live. In East Tenn. you could be in the Smokie Mountains in a very nice spread!!

Re: Wolf Creek, MT
My friend in TX is in the Army and he was stationed in Great Falls as a recruiter for about six years. He has been to every small town and many farmhouses within 200 miles of GF.
He knows specific draws and valleys that has temperature inversions and even which canyons bounce back gunfire because of the formation. People shoot almost every where but you don’t hear it in some places.
So I’m thinking of a place where I can shoot rimfire.

Rimfire should be very doable. Good plan.
