Fathers day shootout
Fathers day shootout
It's that time of year again.
Each year, usually on fathers day, my extended family holds a fathers day family shootout.
My two brothers and I meet at the middle brothers house, because he has a 50 yard range in his front yard.
All of the local nieces and nephews show up, along with many grandkids in tow.
We break out firearms of many different sizes, shapes, actions, and calibers.
We set out standard paper targets, spinning steel targets, a dueling tree for .22lr, a bunch of sporting clays strewn about for reactive targets...
Everyone wears eye and ear protection, and the youngsters go through a refresher course on the 4 safety rules of firearms before the range goes hot.
It has become one of my favorite holidays.
Watching all of the families young ones having so much fun, and improving their individual skills over the sessions.
A couple of the older nephews, and at least one niece, have become quite the crack-shots.
I'm all packed up for the days events.
I think I have somewhere near 2k rounds of various calibers to send downrange and my brothers will bring more.
A couple of the nephews started asking about the shootout weeks ago, which tells me they are looking forward to the day as much as I am.

Re: Fathers day shootout
Sounds like a fantastic plan for family fun! Had thoughts of some family fun at my range for today but to much humidity with the 90 F temps today.
Re: Fathers day shootout
It was 90+ degrees today, and the relative humidity was terrible, but we still had fun.
I went out yesterday and bought a 20'x30' tarp and some rope.
We fashioned an awning for shade over our shooting benches.
The "kids" are growing up, and their tastes are as well.
They still enjoy the .22's, but they are now much more into the larger caliber offerings.
The 18 year old just plain fell in love with my Marlin 1895 in .45-70gvt and my Mossberg 464 .30-30Win.
Everyone had fun with the AR's and AK's.
I shot 5 sporting clays in a row with my 12ga Mossberg Shockwave! But this was after missing at least that many to start.
Once I got a bead it was a little easier.
Tried with the Judge but didn't do worth a crap.
Also couldn't seem to hit them with my Saiga .410 either, but it was fun trying.
Found a loose rear sight on my Chiappa 1911 in .22Lr.
My brother has the identical pistol and I tried a dueling tree for .22's against my nephew before I realized the rear sight was so loose I thought it was going to fall out.
Had a chance to try a new (to me) PT92 that I just bought.
This was a police trade-in, so it looks like it's been through a couple of world wars but the internals are in good shape and the bore is bright and shiny with strong rifling.
It ran as advertised, as expected.
One nephew, after shooting my Henry's in .22Lr, .22WMR, .327fed/mag, and .357mag, pronounced that he "must get himself a Henry", but he wants a .410 bore lever.
I got another one hooked...

That sounds like wonderful family day. Getting everyone involved and teaching them how firearms can be fun.

Re: Fathers day shootout
Several years ago I assembled my first AR15.
I had such fun during the process that I immediately wanted to do it again, so I assembled another one and gave it to my middle brother.
Two weeks later he called to tell me that he had put the range in his front yard and I needed to bring my AR out so we could have a little fun.
