Varmints whith the Henry rimfires

Post by Frank V » Wed Mar 23, 2016 5:47 pm

Let's see if anyone but me hunts varmints & or small game with the Henry rimfire.
I got 12 gophers/small ground squirrels with the Henry youth .22lr today.
It's a fun, very accurate, & easy to use out of a P/U rifle. Yes shooting out of the P/U is legal on PRIVATE properth hunting varmints.
Great day missed some, but got some too! :D

I have hunted gopher in Montana almost every summer for the last decade. I used either a 10/22, Henry Classic or Henry Mare's Leg. I thought the Classic was the best combination but that was before I had the Small Game Carbines. I built two SGC's just for shooting gophers offhand but I also use them to punch holes in paper.

we spend the summers in my wife's hometown in South Dakota .... I used to take a 22 rifle with us hunt gophers in pastures and farm lands owned by family friends .... a few years ago they raised the charge for the necessary license to $40 which seemed too high to me

In Montana you can shoot them without a permit.

Sounds like you were shooting them slightly faster than they multiply. :D

Oh no Rabbits multiply faster than welfare receipients! :o

They do taste good though a stew (Rabbits) with lots of potatoes, onions, carrots, garlic, & whatever else you want.

I have a BIL who owns some Horses and has Country property with a natural spring coming out the hillside where he keeps them. Critters love to get inside and eat the Horses oats and stuff and the water brings them around. We go out there several times a year and shoot critters. They get through or under the fence and eat the Horses food. I have a Henry 22 mag and he shoots a 10/22. Great sport. We even get a Coyote occasionally but just scare them off rather than taking a chance of wounding them. Also great Dove hunting (shotgun of course) in the fall, they are attracted to water.

Where there is water you will often find critters. I set out water in Ephrata which is in the desert and it attracts many animals.
