New back up Beast

In my new lifestyle, I don't have much spare time. I take advantage of my time surplus when I can. I take care of my parents lawn acreage. I used to mow 5 or 6 acres with a variety devices. Trimmer, push mower, lawn tractor and compact tractor. I now do about 1.5 acres around the house, barns and gazebo. I don't have the time to spend a day there for the whole deal. Last month, their cub cadet yard tractor crapped out. I hadn't had time to even look at it. I just got the spare mower, a Craftsman GT5000, and finished. I used it the next time or two. Last week, I decided the back up needed a back up. An even older Craftsman GT6000. It's a brute. It was well cared for and worked fine.

The seller was a nice fellow. He stated it was a 1989 mower. His bosses father bought it new and took good care of it. He was enlisted to sell it on Craigslist for the father. The only issue was the button to move the raising and lowering rod had gone missing. He stated he would mail me a spare and the owners manual. It looked ok, oil was recently changed and I tried it out at my parents. The blades need sharpening, but it did a good job. It's always good to have a back up.

I had some time, so I looked at my parents Cub Cadet. A mouse nest that looked like a sheepskin rug was embedded in the cooling fins. That certainly could have caused the shutdown last month. I am usually in a hurry and probably never lifted the hood to check. I also added ethanol free high test gas. That will cure any other issues fuel related. A back up for the back up it seems. Fine with me.

Looks very similar to the older Craftsman my Dad had to care for his couple of acres. Thanks for the memories of those hot, lawn-mowing days!

I remember distinctly "sliding off" that seat....it was too slick for me! Could never figure why that almost-plastic-like-material was used.
Other than that, his mower ran quite well and was in use for a long, long time. Backups are always a good thing!

Thank you for your post . I missed my farm in Tn with the gun range and 1.5 acre pond . Now I remember why I sold it . It took me almost 8 hrs to cut it with these 2 mowers . My house in Tx takes less than a hour with a push mower and weed eaters

I love that Massey tgr. We want to retire in the Adirondacks. I want property to have large gardens, woods to hunt in and a place to raise chickens. I have plenty of garden tractors and a compact tractor for the job. A Massey like that would really do a great job. I think my fiance would say no. She doesn't want a "farm" she says.

Looks good. I use a JD 190C, 25 hp with a 60" deck. Takes about 3 hrs to do a proper job. Just put a new trans in it last summer.

I think that was the biggest lawn tractor you could get without going to a 320 from a dealer or a garden tractor. Sorry to hear about the transmission. That's why I like garden tractors. Heavier duty everything usually. I do use them for ground engaging gear from time to time.
