Our Morning Coffee and Weather

Good morning all. Enjoying a cup of coffee and then packing for a business and personal trip. Off to SJC this morning and then from SFO (through CLT) to PIT tonight. Oddly, weather where I'm starting the day, ending the day, and landing the next day is all about the same. 80 degrees and sunny! Only hitch may be the connection in Charlotte where I believe we are about to experience a few thunderstorms. Wish me luck!

We've been getting rain all night. Couple of inches already. No wind to speak of yet. Supposed to get up to about 30 mph this afternoon. Did a yard sweep yesterday, but not a full hurricane cleanup. Should be an interesting drive to work this afternoon.

Beautiful day here in southern Alberta. 60's with a nice breeze. Having tea in a tin campfire mug this morning as I was outside doing some chores. Finally my handgun license is in the final stages of processing with the RCMP. It's a long process for sure to get a handgun here in Canada. I passed my tests on June 12th, and they didn't like the form I used so had to mail me another one, then the reference checks, etc. I spoke with them this morning and now it goes to the Alberta Chief Firearms officer to be issued. Then off to the Cimarron dealer with a fistful of cash! Have a good day all.

I have a Cimarron dealer near me. I'm looking at a Colt Open Top revolver.

Congrats on that license....shooting a revolver is a lot of fun and quite challenging at the same time.
Looking forward to seeing how well you do, and also what you think of that Open Top (if that's what you finally get).
That was a really cool-looking revolver.

You bet. However the more I read about the 1860 Richards Mason Colt the more I like it. It's the one I played with most at the gun show. 8" barrel. It has the rear sight in the hammer but I looked through several times and it seemed ok. Gunblast.com has a good review of it. We'll see. I rarely waffle on things, but I'm pretty much a 1 rifle/1 revolver guy, so I'll look real careful at the open top variations. I like the history on the RM revolver; Colt was late getting into the cartridge market due to the patent not having expired. Once they had the green light in 1871, they had thousands of 1859/1860 percussion revolver parts left over so they built conversion revolvers out of them and filled the gap between the old cap & balls and their first purpose built cartridge gun, the 1872 Open Top. First the Richards conversion 1 & 2, then the Richards Mason. Lots of cowboys, marshals, townspeople, etc carried these revolvers because they were inexpensive to buy, or if you had a percussion gun they were cost effective to convert. For around $5 you could have a RM Colt revolver versus the $15 a Model P peacemaker in 1873. They are very old-timey and all reviews I've read say they are great fun to shoot. Anyhow, I'm happy to finally be getting my updated license!

I've looked at many of the Gunblast evals, and the gent Quinn seems to be quite direct in his gun reviews/appraisals. (A little like Hickok45). I especially like their gun photos and accompanying explanations of what you see.

Checked out the 1860 Richards Mason Colt Gunblast review just now. Never have seen a hammer-notch revolver rear sight. Quinn said it was authentic; it does look cool, and my knee-jerk is how well does it work with that sight? But his target reports were impressive, and he gave high marks to the revolver's accuracy with the sight.

Often times "authentic old" is a good thing.

So have much fun making your final choice.
