Getr done. Carol had that surgery and it worked miracles. She came home the same day with me and although there was
some pain involved she made a full recovery. You've little choice in the matter.

Man, that nerve block is a lifesaver. Had that with my rotator cuff surgery. Made a huge difference for a few hours.

I guess not really a nerve block but I've had Spinal blocks twice and a Epidural once for surgery's and hated them. Weird feeling, not numb but it's like nothing is there from your waist down. You can kind of have a feeling of what it's like to be a paraplegic except you know it will wear off.

Don't actually remember the effects of the Epidural much, they had me under sedation for around 10 hrs. and I felt pretty lousy from that.

They did the nerve block first, using a Nerve stimulator to find the nerves to block. It was uncomfortable, but not too painful. Then I was gone, woke up a couple hours later, everything was done. No feeling from midway down the lower arm. There is some pain starting now, about twenty hours later... But grateful for a solid nights sleep. Glad to have the surgery behind me.

I thought my wife would set off the alarms at the airport but they tell me that stainless steel doesn't do that.
She has a plate and six screws. You would never know. She types and does everything just like before.

Headed for my two week follow up with the surgeon this morning. I guess this post could be called a teaser. I have been working the fingers, for range of motion as pain allows. I have been working the wrist for range of motion and flexibility, as pain allows. (Somewhat limited, this early, but working...) Hit the wrong angle in rotational work and...

I have not been...

Working on strength. (Docs orders)
Squeezing tennis balls. (Docs orders)
Sleeping more than two hours at a time (ah... As pain allows?)

I take catnaps, even when I don't plan too.

I will follow up post doc visit when I hope to know more.
My berm and knife projects are calling.

Carol had the same surgery and she went to a Walgreen's and purchased a compression glove and wore it at night.
She said it helped with the swelling and gave her some relief.

They removed the stitches today, and gave me a nice brace to protect the hand and apply pressure.
I can now do the hydro therapy in the tub without the vinyl sleeve.
Thanks for the suggestion... I might try it as well.
The doc was impressed with my range of motion at two weeks, said I was way ahead of the curve, wont send me to
PT at this point. "Keep doing what you are doing."

UPDATE...

A couple days after the checkup, Mother Nature decided to remind those of us in this area that she can play in the major leagues and it's not nice to piss off Mom.


There were Tornado Warnings, and Tornados south of us, including down where my daughter lives around the OK / TX border.

There were flood warnings, and real flooding... Right outside our door.
Yup, they told us they hadn't seen the water this high since the 90s.
We had some flooding last summer, and put the french drain around the woodshop to combat it. This was way beyond that. Our creek became a small river, then a lake, then went up and over the culvert, flooding the roadway, briefly.

Here is what is looked like about an hour before it went up over the road. The weight of the debris and water nearly took out about 40 yards of Miss Ts pasture fence, it was leaning out toward the road at a 45 degree angle when the water finally receded. She cleared the debris and pulled er back upright to keep the livestock in, but real repairs will begin when the materials come in.

When the rain finally stopped and I went out to check on my woodshop. You might remember it flooded last summer, then we put in that french drain. No more problems. There was water FLOWING out the rollup door. Didn't bode well for what I would find when I checked the shop.
My woodshop had water three inches deep in the lower corner, and three quarters of the floor was under water.

I put on my brace, set up the shop vac. I and was careful, and sucked more than a dozen cannisters of water out of the woodshop. I'd estimate about 200 gallons of water from the woodshop, another 100 from the boathouse / tool storage. I did the work one handed, with the recovering wrist tucked in my jacket pocket.

Luckily, my supply of hardwoods, and equipment, were all up off the floor. I had a few pieces off offcut Luann, plywood, and the like stored on the floor to use as box bottoms or in later projects, but if the edges that got wet were damaged, they can be trimmed. My leather, exotics, etc were all protected. I WILL make a rack so any future flood, if any, flows thru with inconvenience only. All wood will be six or eight inches up.

We will look at a solution to improve the flow around the shop. Dyke, deeper french drain, or a drainage ditch of some sort. The shop's location was poorly chosen, at the bottom of the slope of a sixty acre hayfield, funneling all the rain AT the shop.

We could remove ALL the woodworking equipment and tools, supplies, shelves, hardware. Strip the shop bare again. Then pour another four inch slab on top of the existing slab, raising the floor four inches... Then bring the equipment back in. The bandsaw would be a close call to clear the overhead though...

Almost rather build a new dedicated shop at the edge of the pasture in a year or so.

Still doing my PT at home for ROM and flexibilty. Seeing a big reduction in the overall pain in the hand/wrist. The fingers have pain in the joints, and there is a distinct mechanical stop in vertical movement at this time where the plate was installed, but we are still early. There are defined pain centers on both sides of the wrist where the breaks occured, but ... We are still early.

I keep telling myself that, and push just a Little at the edges.
No pain... Must be good meds.
Actually, I cut those out except at bedtime.
The Corps has a Tshirt.
Pain... Is just weakness leaving the body.
Twenty Six surgeries.
I say, pain is progress.
