New target stand

I headed out to start splitting firewood but my mind was on a possible trip to the shooting area at a nearby parcel of state land this coming weekend. So I detoured to the shop and started thinking about how to knock out a new target stand. My old one was worn out and falling apart and went to the dump a while ago. I used to hang my gong in the center of it and it has so much bullet splatter on the wood frame that it was dangerous to handle.

I had used up most of my scrap lumber building a stand for my neighbor so I had to run to Ace Hardware and buy two 8’ sticks of lumber. A 2x10 which was only $28 and a 2x2 which was only $8. Good think I had a few 2x4’s on hand or my lumber bill would have required a bank loan.

This time I decided to hang my gong off the side of the stand to keep the bullet splatter to a minimum. As you can see, the 2x4 that it’s hung from is clamped on the stand. I need to keep the stand portable so this will allow me to carry the stand out to the wanted yardage and add the gong after it’s in place.

Had a good time building it and it sure beats splitting firewood.

Nice portable setup! Are there any support legs in back to keep it from falling back or is it staked to the ground?
Yeah the cost of lumber is ridiculous as I was in Home Depot today pricing lumber for my creek bridge project.

I make up a stand using 2 pieces of 2x4 8ft. long that I attach a 36x24 inch foam core target board to.
Two 4 ft. uprights...2 2ft cross pieces and 2 2ft legs. They seem to last a good while and I make up 4 of them a good while back.

That’s a good idea supporting the rear of your stand on that 4x4. I had the same thought as you about staking my stand so I threw four tent stakes with a protruding hook and a small hammer in my range crate of junk. When I was hitting the gong with my hand while the stand was on the concrete floor as pictured the stand did rotate a bit. I think it will be better on dirt but this caused me to throw in the stakes. Maybe I’ll drill some holes in the base to accommodate the hooks on the stakes, that would be pretty solid.

Those 4x4's are the rails my Saloon target setup sits on to keep it level and off the ground. They extend out a bit so I can sit a target stand on them but the target stands will sit well on the ground . I have hung a gong from the center of one at times.
