Coyote Attack
The neighbors dog Pretzel was attacked and killed by a coyote yesterday in front of them. The mom saw it happen and she chased the coyote till it let go. They rushed the dog to the hospital and reported this morning that Pretzel did not make it through the night.
I wasn’t home but she said the coyote let it go in front of my house.

Re: Coyote Attack
In CT, they are the only animal that may be trapped and hunted all year long.

Im sure they are devastated. Bad enough having to put one down let alone seeing it mangled by wildlife.

Re: Coyote Attack
Fish and Game trapped a coyote in the SFC area that had attacked and bitten FIVE people since last summer. It looked healthy, not diseased or withered, I guess it just developed a taste for human blood.
"It fell for a baited trap and was dispatched via “a properly placed gunshot,”"
LOL that is pretty graphic for a news report. Daily carry folks, even around your own front yard. It is really hard to hit a moving animal, while not losing track of where your shots will go. But if this does happen and you are NOT armed, you will always be wondering if you could have dealt with the problem.

Sad story. I feel for your neighbors.
Makes me want to go Coyote hunting. Keep your eyes peeled Gene. Would be nice to tell your neighbor that you eliminated the problem.....at least one anyway.

Although not a real big problem around here, we have bounty on them on and off.
Not real sure about the present moment.

Re: Coyote Attack
Folks say they are in our city in certain areas. We back up to a wooded area that goes down to the river but I haven't seen any.

Re: Coyote Attack
Sorry to hear that. Not surprised, tough, Coyotes in urban areas prey on household pets a lot. Have heard they consider house cats a delicacy.
Have talked to several trappers and predator callers. Interestingly, they all tell me that there is a pecking order with wild canines. Wolves are at the top and will not tolerate coyotes in the area and will kill them when they can. Coyotes do the same with fox in their area. Of course, you can find all these species in one area, but the ones at the bottom of the pecking order get pushed to the marginal habitats.
From the tracks in the snow, we've had a fox hunting on our land all winter and, sure enough, haven't heard much from the coyotes of late.
Here's one I bet not many of you see on your land. Last week, after a light snow, spotted the tracks of a Fisher while out on the trail with my snow bike. We do have them in our area and I have seen one, before, in the neighborhood, but not an animal you often get to see.

Re: Coyote Attack
We live south of the Twin Cities about 30 miles and bears don't usually make it this far south, however we had one
in our yard a few years ago. Tore down my bird feeders. It got to be a nuisance and started going up on peoples decks
when they were there.
The DNR finally shot it.
I have seen video of a cougar dragging a dead deer off the Interstate just south of us.
We have Bobcats of course and coyotes as well. This morning I was driving out of our drive and our resident fox vixen
crossed right in front of my car. She has a den somewhere up on the ridge and raises a bunch of cubs every year.
Is that what you call baby foxes?

Re: Coyote Attack
You are right. I remember now, they are called kits. Around here coyotes are shot on sight. No season, DNR says, "Kill them!"

We live in city limits only about 4 to 5 blocks from our downtown, yet what we see the most, are bears. Day or Night.

Re: Coyote Attack
We have two active game cams, two died. Both of the remaining cams stay busy. We have an active family of yotes... About six to eight as near as we can tell. Then there are the fox, the bunnies, at least one, possibly two large bobcats. A herd of deer with two very large bucks. Then the armadillos, skunk, possum, coons, owls, hawks, roadrunners...
I guess they pretty much live in harmony because there is plenty of room. We have 21 acres, much of it either pasture or wooded, with a creek looping through and a pond. On one side is a sixty acre hayfield, across the road, 100 wooded acres, on the other side, about forty acres in woods and overgrown pasture. Yup, room to social distance. Miss T was a bit worried about the yotes and the calf she has due, but... The cow hates anything canine for some reason and tries to stomp it into a puppy puddle. All dogs run....
She has two guard donkeys coming. They really hate coyotes.
We should be good.
The wolf she saw s few months ago hasn't returned.

You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.

Washington state shoot on sight year around where shooting is allowed, Only seen one in our culdesac a few years ago,it suffered acute lead poisoning from a 22lr as it just stood there and looked sick, I actually felt sorry for it. We're all pet owners and nobody complained

Re: Coyote Attack
As I said earlier, we live in city limits.
A couple years back, we had packed up getting ready to drive up in the mountains to our cabin. Early morning, and I happened to look through the glass windows on our garage door, only to see a coyote just sitting there between the car and brick wall under our carport. Tried to make noise and scare it away...did not work. Had to call animal control. A sheriff P/U truck with animal box showed up about 1/2 hr later. He of course was a bit un-nerved, but pulled out a snare and bravely approached the animal.
Was able to get it around the neck and put it in the box as I held it open. The coyote was biting the pole the whole time.
This all cost us about a two hour delay, getting on the road.
The poor Deputy said he did not know what to do with it. Local laws said he could not just take it away and release it, yet he could not take it to the local animal shelter either. Don't know what he ended up doing. I woulda just shot it...problem solved.

Re: Coyote Attack
Pretzel was five years old and weighed four pounds. It was an inside on your lap dog. I have never seen it. The dog was let out to do it’s business and within seconds the coyote had it in its mouth and was chomping on the small dog. All going on within sight of the kids inside having breakfast. Mom chased it down the street till it let it go.
I noticed the grandparents car in front of their house most of the day and a few friends stopping by.

My heart breaks for that family. I hope they all eventually recover from having witnessed the violent and deadly attack on their beloved family pet. I expect that none of them will ever forget it.Sir Henry wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 9:23 pmPretzel was five years old and weighed four pounds. It was an inside on your lap dog. I have never seen it. If you speak with them, please let them know that across the country many of this forum's members are grieving along with them. Most of us know and understand the deep bond that we can share with our pets. Theirs is a very sad story. They have my sympathy.
