Slinging big lead with the 45-70 High Wall.....

Post by fortyshooter » Thu Mar 04, 2021 8:28 pm

Went down to my range today to do a little work and test out a new rear sight mod on the 1885 High Wall. What I did was open up the notch width to .090 to give more space around the small front bead when sighting in a target...works better for old eyes. Had to remove the sight to do the job in the milling machine so had to sight it in.
Set up my chair shooting position 40 yds. from target and shot 4 rounds which were Laser Cast 405 gr. cast lead bullets loaded over 13 gr. of Unique.
Makes a very comfortable,for .45-70, plinking load.
First shot was high and left and looked to be a keyhole for some reason. Second shot was more centered but still high. Made elevation adjustment and shots 3 and 4 delivered a very nice 2 shot group!

Then I set up a field of my knock over plates and several sillywet targets and also had the 3 swinging plates back up with new bolts.
From 35-40 yds. it was fun time watching the heavy lead do it's thing. The 6 inch steel knock overs would do several flips after a hit and the swinging plates would almost go all the way around. Much easier to sight the front bead on target with the wider notched rear sight.

And now for Big Al I made a video of it! One thing became apparent when replaying the video...my hat mount I use is no match for more than one shot of a mild .45-70 as the camera would start to angle downward after each shot! Sorry about that folks and will come up with a better mount.
Well at least you get to hear the steel get hit and have a great view of the hammer falling! Still don't why first shot appeared to keyhole but could have been something with the bullet itself. Checked the barrel after a total of 18 shots had been fired and no lead in the bore.
Was great to get out and shoot today and all of next week looks like good shootin' weather too!

You must have been right on my heels when I was posting it up Randy! I linked in the video last after posting up pictures.
Got to make sure the camera pivot is really tight and my hat is welded to my head when shooting the .45-70 next time too!

Thanks for the Video Forty. I watched the video and turned off Tucker. Even if the camera failed I heard to gong on the last shot.

Good video, Forty. I may have to try that load some of these days, to do some plinking. Think it'll be easier on my shoulder.
Thanks, bud.

Forty, that load reminds me of a load I have for the 444, 24.0 of 2400 and my 320+ cast fn.
A pure joy to shoot and does a number on the gongs.
