Ideas for knife storage methods

I'm just starting out, and have a small knife collection (8-to-date). I bet the numbers will grow, as I'm learning more & more about knives, finding how very many varieties/choices there are out there, and enjoying this new "retirement hobby" a lot.

I've seen several Henry Folk that have quite large collections. Could you all share how you store and/or display your knives? Been thinking about different options, but have very little idea if one storage container is better than another. Here are some things I've thought about:

Plastic box? I was thinking of looking at tackle boxes with divided compartments.
Plain-Jane cardboard box? Maybe even the actual factory boxes?
Metal tool box?
Wood box?
I've also wondered about an actual made-for-knives, silicone-treated pouch? Here is one that was interesting, which I found on BladeHQ: http://www.bladehq.com/item--Sack-Ups-P ... uch--16349

So in your opinion, is there a composition of a storage container best for knives? Any material above considered optimal, or are all the options I listed okay? And do knives need to be in any type of protective material like the pouch link?

BTW, if you have pictures of your storage medium, those would be cool to see.

I have some of them in the leather sheath, some in the boxes that they came in and this one stays in the tin it came in. Most are stored in the bottom of the gun cabinet. This one I just keep in a small jar in the top of the cabinet along with some .38 special rounds.

I have a Buck store display. Others are mounted on the front of my rolltop desk. I'll try to get photographs for you.

A tackle box with individual compartments might be nice if they fit. I have a museum table in my living room with most of my Muela knife collection in it. I'll photograph that too. I don't think I ever have photographed them.

Without having shopped yet for a tackle box, I'm hoping that might be an option. Out of the "huge" 8-knife collection I have started, 6 are folding knives 5" or shorter when closed. The mini-SOG fixed blade is 4-1/4" in its sheath. The only fixed blade that would be too large is the orange Buck PakLight Skinner knife. It is 8" long, and almost 9" in the sheath.

But also hope that maybe you, or others, might answer my other main questions. "What is the best composition of a storage container for knives?And/or should they be kept in a treated cloth storage case?" Kind of like how best to store Henry rifles. I use Bore Stores gun cases, which are treated to prohibit rust. Knives may "live" even longer time frames in a storage mode than the firearms I regularly shoot.

My knives are all over. The front of the roll top desk presented an area to put a few things. The sword is Cold Steel 1917 Cutlass. The Thompson is from Collector's Armory. A fun fake. The axes are Grandfors Bruk. A nice place to store and display some large objects.

The Buck display was a nice addition to the collection. It holds plenty. They were in plenty of stores when I was a teen. The kitchen set on the wall is the Buck Empress Trio from the 70's. They were used at my house, now just being displayed and stored out of the way until our retirement house.

The museum case holds the better Muela knives I have. I bought some made in Toledo Spain when I visited the old city. Great craftsmanship and good lookers.

The oak tool chest would be a nice idea if you get a large collection. They can be locked away and then open a drawer and instant display. Mine currently has tools for the basement work area. It may hold knives as the collection grows.

Great photos, DD, and some kind of neat collections you have there!! It's something to see that many knives on display --- reminds me of a museum. Anyway, my retirement resources are too small to catch up with that many sharp blades!

Very cool to see that Thompson hanging around. Even though a fake, it would give viewers pause to think and consider......

I've never really counted. I'm sure there are a couple hundred around the house, in drawers etc. There are several new in the box duplicates that cannot be seen.

A couple hundred! That would be a neat project to gather them up, and have all displayed, categorized, etc. I don't think I could remember the names or specs on that many....wow, pretty cool!

I did get to a store today and looked through some craft supplies for a plastic display case. Found one with 8 sections, 5" long each. It holds 7 out of my 8-knife collection perfectly! The fixed-blade Buck PakLight Skinner is too long....so I have room to add at least one more knife to the case!! (Probably will be a while on that next addition though!). The knives look quite sharp displayed on my den shelf. It's a start....enjoying it so far.

I do not display my knives. I keep them in a Winchester wooden ammunition box. Most are kept in the box they were purchased in. The ones that do not have boxes, I keep in a silicone type wrap with several pouches for holding knives. The ammo box is now full - so I am either done collecting or need to be shopping for another ammo box.

1: I smoke a pipe [no cigs for 2.5 yrs.], but the tobacco store where I get pipe tobacco also sells cigars.
They have some very nice cigar boxes that they sell w/empty. [they give them to my wife a lot].
2: Not really going to be used for knives, but could be. Wife found this wooden box at a thrift store for $5.00.
I'm going to cut top out and put glass in it, maybe refinish and put my DW Super Mags in it to display.
I think it's pretty cool, was a old copy machine case, I'll put some foam in it and a liner ??
I also save silica gal packs whenever I get them [in car parts a lot] and put in storage areas, to help w/moisture

Good suggestion based on your wife finding the wooden box at a thrift store. A new thrift store just opened about 10 minutes from our place, and I might just head out there and check it out this week. I think DD & Steve51 are probably right that I'll need another box, or larger one, in the days ahead. Thanks!

A little delayed on your comment about getting another box.
I did just that today since I didn't go to any outdoor range due to rain here and there.

After a visit to an LGS, I stopped at a wally world's sporting dept to get some Hoppes #9, and some bore brushes for my Henry .22LR. Checked out the tackle boxes again, and found a nice larger Plano box that has adjustable compartments. Depending on the knife lengths, I could display/store about 10 or 11 in this box. Along with the 8 compartment smaller box I have, I'm close to twenty spaces. Remember, my collection is only 8 knives, so I have a little ways to go to fill these up! What was cool is that with the adjustable compartments, I made one for the fixed-blade orange Buck Skinner knife (8" OAL).

So I'm set for some time by the numbers. BTW, I do have my eye on another Case (not wasting any time, am I ?!?). Considering a Peanut I see on BladeHQ. The different Peanuts I see available there are really sharp-looking knives. And there are some plus comments about them on the knife forum, too.

Anyway, want to keep on reading about this Peanut, especially learn more about the Peanut's blade material; it's called Chrome Vanadium, and I've not heard of that before. And there are other knife specs, which I don't know what they're saying yet. But it's been fun digging out that info so far!!

Lately, it's a Buck 307 large stockman in the pocket and a Remington Jumbo trapper in a pouch on my belt. I recieved a Case peanut for Christmas. I'll have to find it and take a few pictures of it.

I've had my Swiss Army knife (multi-tools) as my EDC for so many years, the pants pocket would probably holler at me if it wasn't there every day!! In just this short time I've acquired this fun interest in knives, I have switched my EDC knife, like you, depending on what I'm doing. The Sarge is a "new" EDC lately, and the quite small SOG fixed blade (snarl) fits nicely into the cell phone pocket on my cargo jeans, or even in the small pocket watch pocket. Usually carry only one EDC.

I'll be interested in seeing/hearing about your Case peanut. Which model did you get as the gift? There are any number of threads on KF about those knives, and the comments are interesting -- and sometimes plain 'ole entertaining. Also the longer threads with subject such as "What is your favorite knife?" are great reads.
