Desert shoot update.

Post by Rifletom » Fri Jan 29, 2021 3:46 pm

Last couple times shooting my Pietta, I was getting some leading. Found out the throats were a bit undersized and figured I'd open them up per some ideas from forty and Al. I wasn't sure I wanted to tackle that, so, Al suggested if I had any jacketed bullets for that caliber, load 'em up and give it chance. I'd forgotten that I did in fact load 30 Sierra FMJ 230gr RN and 7.2gr Universal and shot those first, then my regular 250gr rnfp plain.
Next to no leading and here's the kicker: the jacketed bullets slip right thru the throats and my .452" Missouri bullets pass thru with a little bit of a nudge. Yea!! Don't know why I didn't mention this in my last desert range report, but, there it is! Next desert trip, I'll try just the Missouri 250's and the .45acp cylinder. Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm just glad the easier step seemed to help. Still can't believe I forgot to mention this. Loading more .45 Colt after lunch.

That is interesting! I have found sometimes the chamber throat will have a slight taper being larger at the entry and just a bit tighter at exit where a test bullet won't slip all the way thru. Wouldn't take much to open that up.

Yeah, it really seemed to do the job. I thought about the dowel/ grit, but, this worked. Not sure when Missouri will have availability, so, might do an order from T & B bullets. Those look the same as the Missouri ones. Coated this time around. Again everyone, thanks for the help and suggestions getting my Pietta behaving. Now, to the acp cylinder/loads part of it! 8-)
