Pawn Shop Find

I need to stay out of pawn shops. I had some personal business to take care of, about 60 miles from home. When that was done I stopped in a pawn shop I haven’t been to in 5 years or more. Well that was a bad move. Sitting in their pistol case was a used Ruger New Model Blackhawk in 45 Colt/45 ACP. I’ve been looking for one of these since March of last year to go with my Marlin 1894 in 45 Colt. Today this Ruger came home with me.

According to the shop owner he sold this gun new last year and several weeks ago the owner sold it back to the shop. After close inspection, I’m not sure this thing was ever fired. The bore looks factory clean and each cylinder the same. Everything that comes with a new Ruger was in the case. I’m happy and it was over $100 less than I’ve seen them go for new.

I have a few more items of business to take care of this week and then it’s off to the range for some shooting.

I've got the same model. I've taken it to the range twice and shot .45 ACP and .45LC. The .45 ACP cylinder doesn't like my reloads for some odd reason. I'm not sure why but they load just fine in my P220.

Got lucky and the acp cylinder works perfectly in both.

I gave the 45 ACP cylinder a quick check. My regular 45 ACP loads for my 1911's drop right into the chambers. So I'm guessing everything should be ok. I'll find out in a day or two when I get to the range.

I'm not sure why my reloads don't just drop in the cylinders......but they don't. I don't know if something to do with the brand of reloading die I have (Hornady) or not. My P220 eats 'em up just fine though. I really haven't sat down and pondered it a whole lot. Too much other stuff more important.

Looks like the 4 5/8 in barrel to me. I believe that barrel length on single action revolvers looks the best as far as balance goes. Good looking revolver, enjoy!

I bought that same Ruger combo when I bought my Henry BBB in 45 Colt several years ago. The Ruger gobbles up everything I throw at it. The 45 ACP reloads shoot the same reloads in my 1911 S&W Performance. I have every confidence that both my ACPs will get the job done. I shoot 185gr XTP with Tite Group.

Gunny I agree. Ruger makes a very nice revolver, but they sure short change on the grips.

When I bought my .41 NMBH way back in 1999, they had a set of Hogues hanging on the end cap of a shelf. Factory grips are too small to suit me. I think I paid about $25 for them. Nice rosewood grips that are still on it. Still have the factory walnut grips in case I ever sell it tho (not likely).

Now those are the kind of grips I need. I have a big hand with long skinny fingers. Getting a good hold on factory grips is usually impossible. I alway need something that gives me greater purchase. One of my favorite pistols is my Glock 21 with a double stack of 45 ACP. Most folks are very uncomfortable with that gun but for for me it's just right.

Hogue still sells them. The grips in my pic above fit the gun perfectly with no gaps or mismatch anywhere. I did tweak them a bit for my thumb and trigger finger with a little judicious sanding. One of the primary reasons I prefer wood over other materials.
