Tell your friend to try the Smith&Wesson m&p shield EZ 9mm. Has a rail and it's compact. Might save a few bucks to
She looked at one last Summer, handled but not fired. Was nice for the ease of racking the slide (although she had no problems racking the PX4 once I convinced her to just let go of the slide after pulling it all the way back), the non-hinged trigger (had one of the hinged one's on a full-size M&P, personally I hated it) and that it has a grip safety (also available with a thumb safety). I would strongly object to her getting a striker fired pistol without a safety so no Glocks.
We have a mutual friend that has Ruger LCP that I want her to shoot before considering a single stack so she can see how she likes the narrower grip (I had a single stack XDs and even with practice I could never shoot it very well). I would like to see her get DA/SA with a external hammer but know that really cuts down on selections. Also prefer a compact over a sub-compact. We did look at 1911 style sub-compact, a Kimber Micro 9, it was a nice little gun and fairly reasonable at around $500. She didn't care for how it felt, too small but something with a cocked and locked safety would be OK.

60 and 70 cents a round for 9mm thats insane.
That is about what I typically pay for .357s. When I picked up my new S&W a few weeks ago, I payed $30 for a box of 50; that is after the clerk went to the back, there were none on the shelf. This site starts at about $4. It would not be my first choice. But, it beats a blank:
https://www.ammobuy.com/ammo/357-mag
That's crazy, $200 for 50 .357 rounds. I hated paying $24 a box, there was a local place that would occasionally have it for $20. I have 4 or 5 boxes, so I guess until the price comes down I won't be shooting my Henry much, glad I got the convertible Blackhawk, I can at least shoot 9mm in it.
I'll bet the ammo manufacturers didn't raise their wholesale ammo prices anywhere near as much as the online dealers.
Yes, the prices are high. And, I agree that the LGSs aren't as high. But, supply and demand plays a part. And, some people may be betting that some will put their life before money.
On a different but related note, have you all considered a revolver? It seems concealment may be a concern. My wife likes the S&W M 360 due to the weight. Plus, the revolver is point and pull the trigger. We have a few boxes of ammo, that should last for awhile. So, supply is not much of a concern. But when it comes down to life or death, one round may do.

Dave, you might consider making a day trip to Spokane, you may find a better selection around here. I’ve been on a rifle buying kick lately so haven’t looked much at the pistol cases but it seems like they are pretty full. If you decide on a particular gun let me know and I will watch for it in my travels. Always great to have an excuse to peruse the gun shops. Of course this would require a second trip for the waiting period. Grrrrrrrrr.

Waiting period? Didn't know WA had one. I'll never understand (or agree with) the rational behind that particular piece of nonsense.

There has been a waiting period for buying handguns for as long as I can remember. Used to be three days now it’s up to 10 (minimum) days. For many years those of us who had a concealed permit could take a handgun home same day as the dealer was able to run the background check via the FBI and get quick results. A year or two ago the FBI decided to stop doing this so now having a CWP makes no difference when purchasing a handgun. We all get to wait, and wait, and then wait some more.

Move to Tenn. No waiting, buy, fill out the BG check form, go home, start shooting. $10 for BG check.
I rarely ever buy a rifle, but when I do, it's a Henry.

Hmph. Nothing like that here. No permit needed for anything either.
Proceed from NICS (usually only takes a couple minutes) & you're good to go. Private sale/transfer doesn't even require that much.

CT has strict regulations, too. Only those with state issued permits can purchase guns or ammunition. But, background checks are done before permits are issued, so all that's required to purchase a firearm is a quick phone call to the State Police, who check their database, then issue an authorization number. We can buy a gun and take it home as soon as the paperwork is completed.
I recently bought a Colt King Cobra from Buds Gunshop and my time spent with my FFL was less than fifteen minutes; inspecting the gun, signing the paperwork, a little bit of chit chat, and I was on my way home. It's a beautiful revolver, BTW.

I had her try my old Charter Arms Undercover .38 and she did not do well at all with it. It has very small grip and a 2" barrel so she might do better with something larger. Also the price of .38 Special is as bad as .357. 3 or 4 boxes to do some practice could cost as much as the gun.

I will keep that in mind. Our preference's right now are a Beretta PX4 Compact, S&W Shield EZ, Sig P229 (quite a bit more than we want to pay) or something similar.
LGS's all said they usually receive their shipments on Mondays so maybe Friday was not the best time to go looking.

To throw more fuel on the fire my daughter carries a Bersa 380 with hornady critical defence and loves it. not a 9mm but I wouldn't want it pointed at me.

That Bersa 380 is a good little gun. I helped a friend a few yrs ago, to get her a gun & permit. Bersa was what she chose &
loved it.
