Seems like I recall that Unique was named that because it can be used for handgun, rifle and shot shell loading. Within limitations of course. Does anybody else recall this? I do know back in the day when I worked at a shooting products distributor Unique was one of our best selling powders.

I don't load shot shells.
I have used Unique in several pistol calibers and in at least 3 different rifles.
So I'd say you are right, as it is listed as a shotgun/handgun powder.

I've got about 7 lbs of Unique and about five pounds of Universal. I only reload .38 and .357, so it's one of just a few powders in my inventory (H110 and HP-38 are the others). It's an old powder, but Alliant reformulated Unique to burn cleaner than it did in the past, then known as Hercules Unique. I can't speak to the differences, but Unique isn't particularly "dirty" in my opinion.

I don't interchange reloading data when I use Unique or Universal, but they are very similar and perform equally well in my reloads.

Universal and Unique are side by side in my Lee manual with the corresponding min/max loads. Once I pick up the other 2 or 3 jugs next this week I'll be set for reloading for a few years anyway, until either things get better or those 4 horsemen ride by.... :)

You'll get along with Unique and your .45 Colt loadings real well RR. You're set.
