A little trip back thru time..........

Post by fortyshooter » Sun Jan 03, 2021 11:37 am

While putting the Christmas decorations back in garage storage I came across a storage container full of old receipts from my Dad.
He would save a receipt for every purchase and payment and would stick them on a straightened out clothes hanger wire.

After he passed away I kept them and has taken me a good while of time to fully go back thru the history of them. Lots of memories in them from the batch of 1960's. Back then as you might know just about every store had their own charge account and found a lot of those 5-10 dollar payments.
Nice to run across the old stores and shops that used to be around town back then.
Found one from 1962 when the washing machine motor quit. By a new washer you might think? Heck no as he removed the motor and took it down to the local electric motor repair shop for a rebuild for $7.50 ! That's how it was in the 60's !

I can recall this from when I was a kid. When a car starter or generator failed, my father would take it to the local shop for a rebuild. There are still a few shops left that will do this kind of work, but they are few and far between. Today everything is disposable.

Dang Forty now you got me thinking. In the summer most weekends we would go to the lake for a day of swimming and picnicking. First thing in the morning my father and I put an old wash tub in the trunk of the car. We'd drive down to the local ice house, back up to the dock and the man would ask what size block we wanted. I believe it was 25 cents and the man would load it in the tub and off we'd go. Enough ice to cool beer for the adults and soda for the kids.
