Always keep that telescope handy !

Post by fortyshooter » Mon Dec 21, 2020 6:37 pm

So at around 5:40 PM a clear darkening sky and there they were shining in the southwest Jupiter and Saturn! Easy to pick out being only thing that bright in that direction. Had my old binoculars from 1968 and you could see one smaller dot on the left and the larger one next to it...Saturn and Jupiter.
So then I bring out my son's old telescope and try and line it up and there it really was being able to see the rings of Saturn with big ol' Jupiter next to it. Looked really great with the rings of Saturn being on an angle shining bright and Jupiter right there. You have to constantly be moving the telescope
to keep it in view and didn't try to get a picture thru the telescope with my cellphone.
Think tonight was only night that both planets would be that close.

Called my brother up after I got back in it was his 71st birthday today to see if he was out watching for it since he has a really nice huge telescope
but he had forgotten about it and was on the way to his daughter's house. Hopefully he can catch the end of it with some binoculars they have there.
That would make his day!

Don't expect to see it ever again. It has been since the year 1226, ( or there abouts ) that they were in that close alignment.
Glad you were able to see it so clearly Larry.🌑

We had a parting of the clouds and fog just long enough to take a look. Started out with 10x binoculars then went back in for my spotting scope. I really didn’t see much difference between 10x and the 45x on the spotter but at least the scope was on a tripod so held more still. I tried to take a pic thru the spotting scoped with my phone but it failed but we did get some nice pics with just aiming the phone at the event. Reminds me of when the Hale Bop (spelling?) comet was visible in the 90’s, that was fun to see.

This is the pic I took by just pointing my phone at the sky. It was much darker than the pic shows, the shutter automatically did an extended open.

No chance for us, tonight. Snow coming our way. Not that i haven't observed both planets, extensively in our telescopes, but just not this close to each other.

I was out again and this time a clearer sky and I could see 3 of Jupiter's moons along with Saturn in same small view on my telescope. Awesome thing to see in one picture!
