Fraud outa control

Post by markiver54 » Sat Dec 12, 2020 4:33 pm

I was woken up at 5:00 AM this morning by my text notification.
Was a security alert that someone tried to use my Debit card in Edmonton. Alert asked if it was me. I of course sad NO. It was a little later, ( about 8:15 AM ), I got another alert about attempted use in Toronto. Had to call and cancel my card. Inconvenient right here near XMAS. Luckily, I do have another credit card I can use in the mean time.
This is the second time within about two months that this has happened. The last time, my wife caught it. Someone had bought a pizza near Orlando FL.
Fortunately, I'm not out any money! Be careful people!!!
BTW, my son got tagged a while back, three times in two months.

Luckily, I haven't had that problem for several years, maybe longer than ten years ago. It happened just once with a credit card, but the bank caught it and issued a new card within days. I think they sent it by priority mail, though I'm not really sure about that.

I stopped using my Debit Card for purchases, though; there's too much risk. Instead, I buy everything using a Credit Card. I do it for three reasons; there's no personal liability if the account is compromised, it provides purchase protection if there's a dispute with a vendor, and it earns bonus points redeemable for cash. I also zero the balance monthly, so I've never paid interest on the account.

Man, I HATE thieves. Glad you were made aware of it early Mark and fix it. I'm with CT here; no Debit card use, too much risk. Use the CC instead.
It's bad out there, but, this time of year, especially so.

Yeah, it's that time of year. I use cash as much as I possibly can, although that's getting more difficult in the last few years. Some stores won't even accept cash anymore. And gas stations? Forget it, unless you want to trudge inside in the rain and pay up front. :x I really hate "modern society".

All of which is why I don't use a Debit card....just an ol' obsolete check writer I am! Those scamming scanners are placed everywhere without people noticing and grab your number. The sales guy at the local Advance Auto said I'm the only one that writes a check!

I am canceling one credit card cause they wouldn't make good a fraud on me...a bill came in from Kansas city kansas..I live near the ark line and have never been to Kansas city Kansas hundreds of miles away so I called and contested the 79 dollar bill at some clothing store...the credit card company said they would look into it... they came back in a couple of weeks and said it showed the cards chip was scanned in the store so it had yo be legit so they wouldn't stand behind me.. I am the only one that has this card... i KNOW it was not lost and it never went to Kansas city Kansas..how the fraud was committed I dont know but while im sure the credit card people have their rules and procedures.. but....if I can't count on them to protect mefrom thieves then...
I'm done with them....end of that relationship.... very annoying.....

Haven’t used a debit card in years and Ive had fraud on cards 4 times this year. All of my card companies have stood behind them.

I guess I've been lucky, have never had any frauds on my credit or debit cards. Amazon has one of my card #'s on file and almost all other online purchases are made with Paypal. I use my debit card for local purchases only, would never use it online.

I have been getting a lot more scam calls lately. Just got one this morning saying that because of the Co-Vid and the consumer protection act that I was qualified to have all my credit card debt canceled. I said this sounds like a scam, she said "no sir, this is completely legitimate", I said " so at some point you're going to ask me for all my credit card #'s, right", and she immediately hangs up. It's sad that there's enough people that fall for these scams that they keep going.

The scam calls are WAY out of control. I can usually identify them, however, the easiest thing to do is to just not answer the phone if you don't recognise the number. If they don't leave a message, then it was not important!

My credit card has been hit twice in the last 2 years. Fortunately we receive charge notices on my phone and my wife's. At least I can notify the card company and deny the charges immediately. Both times my card was canceled and a new card issued with no expense to me. I'd love to catch these dogs a ring the living daylights out of them. :x

I get an occasional call from a # not in my contact list that is legitimate, usually from the local medical center which has a lot of different #'s. If it's a scam, sales, etc. call, I'll block the #. If I'm not busy I'll keep them on the line for awhile to see how long it takes them to realize I'm just messing with them.

My debit card has been hacked twice in 2 years, luckily Keybank has excellent fraud protection. Transaction were cancelled and new card issued. I suspect it was skimmed at gas stations. Have since got a chevron gas card with a $750 limit. I only use it for gas and pay off monthly.. problem solved
