Overdue Range Trip

I realized that it has been awhile since I took my M1 Garand out of the safe and to the range. So today I decided to fix that. I went to my club and set up on the rifle range. Beautiful weather in the mid 50's F and clear. I brought 80 rounds, of 30-06, already set-up in clips and ready to jam into the action.

Here's my M1 as I uncased it:

Then set-up on the bench and ready to go:

My target was set at 100 yds. I then proceeded to fire the fist clip of 8 rounds. When I checked the target I was very upset since my impacts were all over the place. My first guess was the sun was causing a problem since our rifle range faces due south. This time year the sun is low on the horizon and right in your face. I proceeded to double down and try another clip. Not much better results.

By this time another shooter showed up and I took a break while he set-up. I was checking the rifle over and I spotted a problem. The screw on the elevation adjustment had backed out about 2 turns. I tightened it up and was ready for the next clip when the other shooter was ready. So now I had to rezero the sights but at least I had a group.

I finally got the group back on target center but the sun glare was getting worst. I fired one more clip and struggled to see front sight because of the sun being directly in front of me. I marked my last 8 rounds on the target below. At that point I knew I wasn't going to get better so packed up the Garand for better conditions a few months from now.

After casing the Garand, I moved the target to 50 yds and brought out my Marlin 1894. Burning up 50 rounds of 45 Colt just for fun. Overall It was a great day to be at the range.

Just some background info. on my Garand;

I've had this Garand since 1984 when I got if from the DCM program. The DCM was the predecessor to todays CMP program. At that time you not only had to be a member of a DCM affiliated club, but also had to show active participation in High power rifle competition. The rifle, based on serial number was built in July of 1945. It is mostly original with period correct parts. The biggest flaw is the butt stock is not period correct. My guess is the original butt stock was in poor shape and replaced by the DCM before shipping it out.

Overall It was a great day to be at the range.

That is a nice M1 Headhog and you did well with it shooting into the sun! That's how I have to shoot during the afternoon and might makes us better shooters!
