Range Report: Dec 3rd

Post by Sir Henry » Thu Dec 03, 2020 5:51 pm

Everything seemed to come together today and I came home with a decent target. I shot the Henry SGC and CZ American.

The 452-2E wears a Leupold VX Freedom Rimfire 3-9x40 with a Mark 4 Anti-Reflective Device.

It robs about 2% of the light but also tells you if you are not centered.

The Henry did not perform any better today using premium ammo. Yes it will give me a two inch circle but would not break one inch. Even with a modern Nikon P-Rimfire scope would it improve. This target was shot with the CZ.

The CZ on the other hand came shining through. Once the brand new scope was zeroed it gave me sub-inch groups every time. This was the best of six 10-shot targets. I felt the rifle was far more capable than the target I produced.

This target would have been scored:
9-10(2x)
1- 9

This target was shot with the CZ using min-mags. I grabbed a tube for the photo op and now realize it was HP. I was shooting 40 grain solids.

The target on the right is the target above.

I compared a Henry Youth against a CZ Scout a year ago. Both had iron sights, shot shorts and was at 25 yards. Bench rest. Then a week later did a rematch standing offhand, ten rounds in ten seconds. I was lucky to get more than seven off with the CZ. The Henry was in its element.

This is another CZ target. With the three shooter flyers this would have been the best 10-shot target of the day.

The rifle really seemed to like the Norma. In closing the bolt the locking into battery is very tight. I would say the headspace is right on the money.

The trigger is a dream. If I remember correctly it is set at 1.5 pounds. The two Henrys in comparison have had no trigger work done. The pump was unfired before this week.

This speaks volumes. I would expect that a lever with a nice trigger would outshoot a bolt with a heavy trigger. Takes all the advantage of the bolt lock up right out of this picture. Great review of the Henry Youth and the CZ Scout. Your comment of the Henry was in it’s element is spot on.

Group size gets all the press, but what I also like about those CZ groups is that they are nice and concentric. I like that in a rifle and the shooter. Says the both of you are consistent. A rifle, especially, that strings groups can be a real headache to cure. Nicely done, Gene.

Thanks Joanie. It’s always nice when everything comes together.
