Broken Sandbag

My favorite sandbag broke yesterday. After 19 years of service it will be retired.

When I was shooting yesterday I would rest the rifle on it. I think some of the sand might have stuck to the bottom and when I flipped it over to load some might have fallen into the action.

While it being an easy clean/fix I don’t have time this morning as it’s my third and last range day. I’ll grab another rifle and head out around 11 am. It’s better when the sun has been out half the day.

Gene, I had the same thing happen about two years ago. Put some red duct tape on it, PRESTO!, still going.

the bag looks like the ones I made many years ago out of sections of legs of an old pair of jeans .... every once in a while I have to patch them with a few hand sewn stitches .... never thought of retiring one ..

Only 19 years. Boy, sure don't make things like they used to. Ha, Ha! Probably bad sand.

I hate sandbags, I keep a few 100% cotton wash rags (bar towels that I use to wash and dry my cars and windows) in my shooting bag and lay a clean one on top of the sandbag. The bags you find lying around at a range are just plain dirty, leaking and gross. Same with propping my rifle up against a gun stand, a clean rag goes on the ground. Filled a few sandbags in my Army days. The old canvas ones were best. Sorry for your loss Gene!is that a loopy scope?

It will spring a leak elsewhere. I’m going to bury it in the back and play taps.

Yep. New ones are easy enough to buy or make. Last ya another 19 years!

When I get a small hole in mine I can get get a few more years out of them by hand sewing the hole back shut with the waxed dental floss. The waxed dental floss is some tough stuff. I used to sew tears in my fishing boat cover with it and it does not seem to rot from the sun and other weather elements. The legs from old rabbit hunting pants made in to sand bags will last for years and take abuse the blue jean material can't stand up to. My sand bags really see a lot of use year round. I had sand bags made from the hunting pants fall off the hood of my truck on the Wyoming/Montana hard packed roads and never tore any of them. This happened a few times at 50-60 mph if the roads were not like a washboard that about beats your vehicle apart. Some times you can get rabbit hunting pants cheap at yard sales to make bags from.
