Recommendations for good hiking shoes....

Post by fortyshooter » Wed Nov 18, 2020 5:19 pm

Looking for a pair of comfortable hiking shoes that are available in wide sizes and keep your feet dry and hold up more than 1 year.

Bought a pair of New Balance shoes last spring and the soles are coming off due to getting wet I presume.
Went to Dicks after looking at their online stock and EVERY shoe I looked at was only a narrow standard fit. I like a 9.5 size Wide and hard to find in local stores.
If you have a proven brand you like please pass it on....Thanks!

If you have an Academy Sports store near you, go there and check out their stock. The ones in my area usually have a large selection of sizes, brands, and models.

Surprisingly, to me, I have had a pair of Sketchers going for 2 years now. They are comfortable and waterproof.

Hey All,

Merrell brand - really hard to wear out or stretch out any seams. I have two pairs of ugly but totally intact merrells as I wear them to work and on field trips and weekend walks. They just start to look ugly. At work I wear the low ones.

Or mid

As for boots I wear hathorn packers.

I am a big fan of Merrills, but sometimes you get a pair that self destructs, for no obvious reason, REI carries them, if you can get to one of their retail stores they will help you find what works for you. They really understand boots, and more importantly, proper boot fit.

Vasque, but, they're a bit pricey. Best, most comfortable boot I've worn. Waterproof, the whole nine yards.

I like LaSportiva’s because they are narrow. The Merrill’s and Salomon’s are a wider shoe.

Thanks for the suggestions! I need the wider fit and have narrowed down to a few brands to choose from.

I prefer Vasque, had a pair I used from college to 20 years later. Used Vasque since then.

I wear Keen’s on a daily basis. I had plantar fasciitis and they were the one shoes I could wear while I was recovering from that. They have numerous models for wide feet that are waterproof.

I also have a pair of Keens. Don't wear then a lot and I don't hike but they seem very well made and are comfortable after a short break-in (I do have a set of PowerStep insoles in them(the orange ones)) Mine apparently only come in a medium width but a search shows lot of wide widths available.

Not in the shoes category but...Danner Explorer is what I have. I put them through hell. I have re-soled them twice. I need more support around my ankles do to surgery, and these are great for that. Totally waterproof, handmade in the USA. Best boots... and just maybe the last boots I will buy.
