National Ammo Crisis! Where is the Ammo & When Will Prices be ‘Normal’ Again

Post by runnin n gunnin » Fri Nov 13, 2020 3:34 pm

I found this article interesting with some good stats regarding ammo/primer shortage. You all may have already read it, and certainly nothing new, but the statistics are interesting.

National Ammo Crisis! Where is the Ammo & When Will Prices be ‘Normal’ Again

To understand the ammo crisis, you must first understand the ammo supply chain aka “The Anatomy of a Pew”In order to make a bullet go “pew” you need a primer, a casing, powder and a bullet.

Lets start with the “Primer” because that is where the biggest part of the problem lies. There are only four (4) domestic manufacturers of primers in the United States: Federal, CCI, Remington and Winchester.

Like any other business category, primer manufacturing is tooled and equip to meet average demand in an average year for the military, law enforcement and recreational or defensive shooters. It is no secret that 2020 has been a not so average year.
We have seen international lockdowns, the rise of socialism and communist m0vements, violence and rioting in our cities and political uncertainty that we have never seen before.

These things have caused the record sales of over 17 million guns in America this year. The most noteworthy part of that being that according to Smith and Wesson during an investor briefing, over 9.4 million of them or about 40% are first time gun buyers. Most of these first time gun buyers are women, minorities and men that otherwise have never until now felt the need to be able to protect themselves and their families.
Lets pretend for a moment that each of those 9.4 Million first time gun buyers actually wanted to have bullets, magazines and other required items for their new guns.

If each 1st time buyer bought 3x 50 round boxes of ammo, 3 magazines, a red dot optic and a gun safe, bag or holster, that would mean that 1st time buyers sucked up 1 billion, 410 million bullets, 9.4 million red dots and 9.4 million holsters, bags or safes.
Now compound that with panic and frenzy buying from traditional yet unprepared gun owners and you have bullet sales not in the hundreds of millions but in the tens of billions. Oh and lets not forget that the Department of Homeland Security executed all their rated contracts with these manufacturers at the beginning of the year for their fed bois.

Oh yeah and don’t forget that Remington is bankrupt and was sold on the court house steps to Vista Outdoor just the other day.
Internationally, primers are manufactured by several firms in different parts of the world. Armscor in the Philippines, for example, Sellier & Bellot in the Czech Republic, Fiocchi in Italy and JSC in Russia are some of the more prominent companies. Industry insiders have told Tactical xxxx that many of these international primer manufacturers were “shut down” for up to two months earlier this year for COVID and are way behind in their own production. We have been told however that international primer shipments should start hitting our shores in October but as of this writing in mid November, that has yet to happen.

Is ammo impossible to find?

No, if you know how to look and where to look you can find ammo. Most of it is not reaching local gun shops and what is, is very small allocations from distributors like RSR, Zanders and Sports South that are doing their best to ration allocations. When you do find this ammo, it will probably be at “regular pricing” and available for very small periods of time with strict limits on per customer purchases.
A few larger players are fighting for allocations of pallets of ammo (mostly international brands) as they arrive in America and clear customs. This ammo currently is going for many times double or more what it cost a year ago.

To understand where we are going, you must first understand where we have been. This awesome data we found in a reddit was pulled years ago from Gun.Deals data and shows you the average cost of popular calibers of ammunition during recent history including the “big years” of 2009 and 2013
ammo sales jpg.jpg
ammo sales jpg.jpg (97.07 KiB) Viewed 1895 times

As you can see, the most popular rounds by sales volume was .223 and 9mm respectively. .223 hit .68 per round in 2013 while 9mm hit a high of .54 in 2013. Now if you consider that according to ATF and FBI data there were 10,844,792 guns sold in 2013.

They are projecting that we will hit 20,000,000 in 2020 before the end of the year.

That would represent an increase in sales of 84.4% 2020 over “the big year” of 2013.Currently average ammo price on Ammoseek for 223 is 1.10 per round.
Currently the average ammo price on Ammoseek for 9mm is .84 per round.

If you adjust ammunition costs from 2013 up 84.4% based on demand, it is safe to say that ammo pricing increases at least for the next couple months could continue to rise to as much as an average of $1.25 for .223 and an average of .99 for 9mm
Our forecast is that ammo prices will rise an additional 12-25%

The good news is, the primers will land. The manufactures currently backordered in the billions will catch up. But the future is uncertain and it will be years before we see “the good ole days” of ammo prices again.
I stand for the flag, and kneel for my fallen brothers.

Yep. Reality is starting to get folks attention lately. I've read similar articles along the same lines, although this one was well done and documented. Thanks. I'd appreciate the source please.

That said, I stopped by the local AF base to see what they might have gotten in since last week. 3 boxes of 9mm RIP at $35/pop. No thanks. Some small quantities of hunting ammo on the shelf and some .22lr & 10mm, but no .41 mag, 5.56 or .223. Conservation is where it's at for most folks these days.

Local LGS just got in lots of powder and primers at reasonable prices for todays economy, I think. Bought CCI large pistol magnum primers for $7.00/100 and Ramshot Zip pistol powder for my 45 ACP for $30.00 /lb.

Last primers I bought during the summer were $39.99 for 1000. Guess those days long gone now.

Whew, that is sobering. Last time I bought primers at my LGS, they were $33 + tax. Now, he doesn't have any and has no idea when he can get more.
Same with Missouri bullets and X-treme bullets. Powder seems to be no problem. Got some lean times in front of us. I mentioned last week I traded a buddy LRP's for LPP's. Tomorrow, I'm trading 1,000 once fired .38 spl cases for 700 SPP's. The bartering system is alive and well friends.

Thursday I made a 100 mile round trip to buy a pound of powder. Since there was a two pound limit I bought two. This store has had a good supply of primers and I intended to take a look and maybe pick up some more. Gol partway home and it occurred to me I forgot to look for primers. Damn old age anyway.

That’s an interesting but sobering article, thanks for posting it.

My stepson who lives in Southern California is one of the statistics mentioned in it. He married into a very anti-gun family that are all local to him so he has had a lot of indoctrination from them. It appears that maybe this family or at least his wife anyway have seen the light as just last week he took possession of two shotguns, a Kel-Tec KSG and a EAA home defense pump along with a Glock 9mm. He plans to take a course or two specific to the guns he bought. He has done quite a bit of shooting with me but not much in the last several years.

Sorry boys, been running around. I am glad that you find the article worth your while.

The source is from a website I subscribe to "Shooting Sports News" also called Ammoland. It has some Hyperbole as most sites do, but the majority of the information is credible and worth while. I also like that it covers events and legal challenges to the 2nd amendment across the country, not just one area. Many of the contributing writers have a very strong military/law enforcement/firearms background.

The home page site is: https://www.ammoland.com/

I hope you find is worth your while, I certainly do !

Thanks. I have enough for around 30 or 40 deer seasons, but my Henry and Blackhawk, and whatever ammo is left over, will be bequeathed to a young relative long before then. :)

No problem Gene. Didnt know if you were looking for some but I thought Id let you know. I have enough ammo loaded of all calibers to keep shooting for quite a while. When things like this happen I just pick the calibers I want to reload for and save the primer stock i have to load those.

Hmm. I've been throwing away my fired brass (since I don't reload) for several years - 9mm & 41mag. Prolly should have saved it up. What's the going price on once fired? ;)

One thing that is not generally emphasized, is lack of raw materials like lead and copper to make bullets and cases. Many of the mines around the world have cut back or shut down entirely due to COVID, without the material flow, the ammo makers are stuck in limbo. They can’t make bullets from air.... From a September 2020 newsletter from a local range:

“.... we as an industry are all scratching our heads on range ammo. The reasons for the lack of ammo vary from day to day and who you are talking to. The general consensus among the people who work in the supply chain is that it is a combination of reduced workers in the ammo factories, lack of components, two major manufacturers operating at less than 40% production and hoarding by the consumers. I am not sure how accurate all that is but I will tell you of a conversation I had last week with an ammo manufacturer. He told me"I have production capability for 80 hours of production per week but only have components to run at about 20%." That is a serious situation and I frankly don't see the end anytime soon.”

https://www.centertargetsports.com/new ... 4668791399

I started building up my reserves of cheap factory range ammo and components in March, as soon as the Covid mess became a big deal. I don’t shoot that much any more, but I don’t worry about having none of the “parts” required to make more. And I trade the excess 9mm crappy White Box ammo, or use it as a teaser to get a buyer more likely to buy something I sell locally at the gun trader website. “Free box of 9mm if you buy my _________”. It helps to persuade a guy sitting on the fence to buy.

Save any and all range brass (toss the steel cases) it has at least scrap value. I visited my recycler last month and he gave me $8 for a 5 pound 1 gallon zip bag.

Your 9mm brass has no real value, maybe $20 per 1000, or $40 if cleaned and sorted, your .41 Mag brass OTH is worth some $$$$. Maybe $25 per 100, depending on how the supply of new brass is at the time. Especially if the headstamps match, especially if they are Starline. Sell or trade those locally, if you have a resource to post them (Craigslist bans reloading components). Or sell them on Gunbroker.

You reloaders can still buy components at sort of decent prices, MidwayUSA, Natchez and Brownells for example let you sign up for email notification when a product arrives. But you have to react instantly when the message is received, or others on the list will have grabbed it all up. Don’t wait twelve hours and expect it to still be in stock.
