New Long Ranger .308 Owner
I am a very happy camper right now. I am 57 years old and grew up watching John Wayne and Clint Eastwood westerns. Ever since I was a little kid, I've wanted a Henry rifle. I didn't care what caliber, I just wanted one. Well, my wife decided that she would get me one for Christmas this year so she asked me which one I wanted. I did some research and decided on the Long Ranger in .308. I already have a Marlin Model 1893 lever action in a 32-40 so I wanted to get a longer range rifle. I also wanted to stick to a NATO round and chose the .308 (7.62) over the .223 (5.56). I went down and picked it up yesterday. It is everything I have dreamed of since I was a kid.

Thanks for the welcome, everyone. To answer JEBar's questions, I do intend to use it for hunting, and yes, I do my own reloading and plan to reload for this as well. I just added my rifle to the How Many page. I do plan on being an active participant in the forum. I love guns, reloading and shooting.

Re: New Long Ranger .308 Owner
I bought our first generation 308 Browning BLR back in 1970 it has been and continues to be one heck of a shooter .... Henry patterned their Long Ranger after the BLR .... if I was in the market today for another one, I'd go with the Henry .... in the for whatever it may be worth catagory, I've found that 150 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip and Accubond bullets excel .... I practice the the Ballistic Tips and hunt with the Accubonds .... our is scoped and there is no need to make any adjustments when I switch from one to the other .... the best source I've found for purchasing them is Shooter's Pro Shop ===> http://www.shootersproshop.com/loading- ... jax/1.html .... looking forward to your coming range and hunting reports
Re: New Long Ranger .308 Owner
Congrats on your Long Ranger and welcome to the Forums! I've had my LR in 308 for a couple of years, and it's a beauty. Enjoy and keep us posted on your experiences!

Re: New Long Ranger .308 Owner
JBER, I'm looking for mounts and scopes. Do you have a recommendation for either or both? Also, I know the .308 is a 7.62x51 round. Can it also fire other 7.62 rounds, such as the 7.62x39?

Re: New Long Ranger .308 Owner
while I'm sure there are other brands that would be just fine, for the scopes I've mounted on our Henry rifles, I chose to get with mounts sold by Henry .... so far, they've all performed flawlessly ..... all I can say is you are absolutely correct that Henry's .308 is a 7.62x51 round .... being solidly old school, I look for components labeled 308 Winchester
Re: New Long Ranger .308 Owner
7.62x39 is .312 in diameter and 308 is .308. I would not shoot 7.62 in that rifle and I bet it would not chamber.

Re: New Long Ranger .308 Owner
Thank you all for the information. While I do reload and as a retired soldier, I do know weapons, I am just not familiar with the Henry and I want to make sure I treat her right. Thanks again.

Welcome to the forum from Tenn. The .308 is an excellent caliber. You'll enjoy it for sure.
I rarely ever buy a rifle, but when I do, it's a Henry.

Can anyone suggest the best, reasonably priced, scope for this rifle?
