Surprise!

Post by BrokenolMarine » Mon Oct 26, 2020 4:16 pm

A couple mornings ago, started like every other for Miss T, she went down to let the guineas out of the run to free range, then the chickens into the run from the coop. Then she walked down to the barn and gave the cows their morning grain.

The gals taken care of, she walked back up to the coop to burn the bag of household trash in the burn barrel. As she stood beside the coop tending the barrel, looking down toward the barn and pond, she was chatting with the guineas, and they were chattering back.!

She heard something snort behind her, and turned to look. :o She, and the wolf, were both shocked. Both froze for what seemed like minutes, but was probably just several seconds... Then, the wolf exited stage right. Poof... Just a wolf outline in a falling puff of reddish gray hair drifting down. Meep meep.

When she started to breathe again, she walked the two hundred yards back to the house. We figured he didn't see her because she was blending with the coop, and might not of smelled her because of the fire. Hate to think he knew she was there and didn't care... Or worse, was creeping up on her rather than the fowl. :?

She takes her gun to the coop now.

I thought you only saw the big bad wolf on the way to grandmas house. Seriously I’m glad she is okay.

Glad she's safe, but more than likely scared the daylights out of the wolf.

Ah, this IS grandmas house. ;)

We had seen the same wolf on the game cam the previous week, time stamped in the wee hours. Since the fish and game website noted that wolves EAT coyotes, and we have a coyote problem, we thought we were on the same team. :)

We hadn't intended on adding the wuff to our list.

The shockwave 12 gauge would be perfect, but all three would be a pain in the butt when doing chores. The glock rides out of the way, as the 357 snub would.
The 40 hydrashock or 357 Golden Saber will do the trick if the Big Bad Wolf turns the wrong direction.

Sounds like you've quickly amassed enough livestock to attract the Big Bad Wolf, so glad to hear that Miss T. and the flock(s) escaped this encounter unharmed!

Aren't the chances of it being a "Lone Wolf" not very good? Isn't there likely to be a pack in the vicinity?

Not real familiar with wolf behaviors and the research I did was quick and dirty since we didn't think there could really be wolves in the area. Imagine my surprise to find that the creature that flashed thru the game cam in the wee hours, could easily be wolf following the yote buffet.

Not, however, as great as miss Ts surprise.

I guess I should really do a little more research. It could turn out to be a feral hydrid dog someone got tired of. ;) One of my pilots in Hawaii had a wolf/shepherd mix to protect his family. Never a worry when he deployed. :)

I spent some time looking at the information on line regarding wolves in Oklahoma. Imagine my surprise to discover that Wolves in Oklahoma are extinct. Funny, that's the same thing they told everyone in VA about cougars and mountain lions when they would call in about the sightings, prints, livestock attacks. NO cougars or Mountain Lions in VA. Then a farmer who had called in several times about sightings, and attacks on his livestock, called and told them to send a Warden out to take a report on the NON-existent corpse of the Non-existent mountain lion that had attacked his horses and done non-existent damage. Of course since they didn't exist, he didn't need a permit to shoot it with the 12 gauge slug, and end it's Non-existent life.

Shortly afterward, the Fish and Game biologists released a report stating that due to the fires in the NC swamps it appeared that Cougars/Mountain Lions Had moved up into VA as far north as Central VA and farmers should keep a watch for them. ;)

I kept looking and there are conflicting reports from various sources saying that there may be as many as 100 Red Wolves in the mountains of Oklahoma, or Hybrid Wolves/Coyotes. Meh... Tina was two feet from this thing and swears it was a Wolf. She had no reason to stretch the truth... nothing to gain. We had moved the camera at the coop a few days before, to cover the area behind the pond. I pulled that cam cards from all three gam cams the next morning but two of the three cards didn't have any vids at all. Bad cards or dead batts I guess. I'll pull the new cards in the next day or so and review those videos and see if Lil Red's Buddy shows up on any of the three cards.

I often got cool surprises on the cards in VA....

Didn't Know HE hunted, but he missed this time:

This wolf story appeared in our local weekly paper this week, this encounter happened about 60 miles north of where I live. I’m sure your wife will appreciate how this guy felt......... :o

“ “He was essentially surrounded,” said Manke. “When he yelled at them, one or more of the wolves bared their teeth and they did not move.”

He said the man had a firearm with him and fatally shot one of the more menacing wolves to get out of the life-threatening situation. The other animals retreated enough for him to get out of that location. Because he had no cell service, the man had to walk back toward his vehicle to report the incident.”

The comments were interesting. The whiners started right in trying to say the man lured the pack in so he could legally kill an endangered species, blah, blah, blah. SSDD.
