How many rounds per target?

Post by Sir Henry » Tue Oct 06, 2020 11:25 am

How many rounds per target should I shoot? I thought one and my friend said three but we were both guessing. I could only find where to buy them on the net.

I thought that was Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

I’ve been reading up and I guess my goal is unrealistic. If I did it would set a world record.

the only time I've ever fired for a score was during our annual rifle/revolver/shotgun requalification during my career with the NC Dept of Corrections .... the number of rounds fired per target was governed by what we were shooting .... other than that, I've always set the number by what I'm trying to do .... for example : first picture below shows 5 rounds fired at 75 yards out of out 45-70 back in April of 2016 .... second picture shows 12 rounds fired at the same range out of the same Henry exactly one year later (it vividly shows me flinching from the recoil  ) .... the third shows 100 rounds fired out of our Henry 44 Mag at 100 yards back in Dec of 2018 .... the fourth shows 20 shots out of our Henry 44 Mag at 50 yards back in Jan 2020 .... the third shows 50 fired out of our Henry 44 Mag at 50 yards back in August of 2018

Well, if shooting for groups, one shot since that is always the smallest.... I guess you don't mean that. How about one round per target until you run out of patience. If they are too easy at 50 yards, keep moving them out until they get difficult, or you can't see them anymore.

How do you like that CZ? What model? I have a SilencerCo special 455 and it shoots like a laser beam with the 17.3 inch .17HMR barrel, way more accurate than I am. It isn't so great with the .22LR barrel.

All, what I was wondering was about how many shot for competition. I later found out it’s ten per bullseye.

JEBar, very impressive groups.

Gene, I don't think your .25" at 100 yards is anywhere near a world record as in ... "and 91 metres (100 yd) 10 shot groups are around 2.5 millimetres (0.1 in). Five shot groups are significantly smaller." I've had a couple of centerfire bolt guns that did .25" at 100 yards for 5 shots, just no rimfires, though.

As for how many shots per target, I've always used five shots, given that's the standard for accuracy testing, but the average group size with the 5 shot group is really the most reliable way to test for accuracy.

In hunting circles, the three shot group has been the traditional group, since those first three sots are all important, but I prefer 5 shots.

Going to 10 shots is as much a test of the shooter as the rifle, as far as I'm concerned. I've been using ten shot groups for my indoor air gun shooting and keeping score and, believe me, that is one tough mental challenge for the shooter. Have to go though some mental gymnastics not to blow that tenth shot when I've run a perfect string of nine shots.

Joanie, I meant the competition score not group size. I later found out these targets were meant for ten rounds for each of the five targets. The max score is 500 and the record is 500 (39x).

I have started with three 10x and then my shooting goes bad. The fourth shot might be a 9, then a 7. My goal was to get five x’s in a row. I’ll make a report on today’s shooting in an hour or so.

Got it.

Yeah, shooting ten for score is what I do with my indoor air gun shooting. It is mentally challenging for sure. You have to develop the discipline to treat every shot as the only shot and forget all the others so you can give 100% to that shot. Way easier said than done.

Exactly. I was shooting one round per target because it could easily produce one ragged hole for three rounds on one target. Shoot ten and only see six holes. Maybe in two groups. So which group had the extra rounds.

Ha! I couldn't even get that gun to my shoulder with that weight. I'd need the Quigley Jr version.
