High-Dose Flu Shot

Post by JEBar » Sat Sep 19, 2020 8:52 am

we've been trying for about a week to get our "high-dose flu shot" .... because of the demand from seniors in our area, our doctor's office is out of the high-dose vaccine, the Walgreens in a neighboring town where we usually get our shots can't keep it in stock and its the same at a couple of other pharmacies we have called .... yesterday we called the new Walgreens in our town and they had it in stock .... we immediately drove over and got our shots .... yes, our arms are sore this morning but having been hospitalized and ending up in heart surgery as a result of having the flu, a bit of a sore arm is no problem at all

Good for you. No problem getting mine here in Houston I got the pneumonia shot two years ago and when I went for my flu shot this year, the pharmacist told me there was a new pneumonia shot phenmovax 23 that supposedly helps protect against more things. I was really sore for two days with that one then it went away. Getting old isn't for sissies.

Well, at 62, I've Never had a flu shot, or a pneumonia shot.
And haven't had either since I was young.

I'm not going to say they don't work because I think they do. I had flu shots for years while I was in govt employment and I always seemed
to get the flu anyway. Since I retired twenty years ago I quit getting them and haven't had the flu since. I do get the Pneumonia shot and
a few years back got Pneumonia so bad I was nearly hospitalized. I asked my Doc how come and he said it was a different strain.
Go figure.
I think having school age children around is where a of this gets spread. The little, (I do love them), typhoid Mary's bring it home from school.

Never had a flu shot either and it reminds me of my days working at the plant. They would give free flu shots there every year and my supervisor would urge me to get one which I never did. Of course he would get it and then always catch some kind of flu later on.
Think I had one case of the flu and this was during those years when my son was in elementary school.

For years, I would get the down in bed, can't get up flu, every Thanksgiving or Christmas. Started taking flu shots, haven't had it since.
You can take the shot & still get the flu. Different strain than the shot was designed for.
I get mine @ the VA, which I'm going to do Mon. My pneumonia shot is up to date, same with shingles.
Same thing doesn't work for all.

Been getting the flu shots for maybe 12 years. I have been fine while people around me who did not get the shots were sick.

You can't equate one person's experiences with flu to the big picture. "My dad smoked for 90 years and never got cancer." "I never bought a fire extinguisher - my house never burned down." "I have been healthy all my life, I don't need a vaccine."

Flu shots do work, they may not stop an individual from getting it, but they sure do work well in reducing the general infection rate of the vulnerable age groups. I get one every Fall.

The VA keeps me up to date. Once I got surrounded by two nurses at a VA clinic and threaten with bodily harm if I didn't get a flu shot. You don't mess with VA nurses. Plus they said they would tell my wife.

I got flu shots every year for 30 years at work, the one test I didn’t I got pneumonia and ended up being flown to a larger city hospital. One of my lungs ended up with an infection, several chest tubes and hospitalized for 6 weeks. 2 months of home IV’s, I don’t know if there was a correlation but I haven’t missed one since and have not had the flu.

second day after getting the "High-Dose Flu Shot" no sign of soreness at the injection site .... still a hit of stiffness .... whether a person chooses to take the flu shot or any other elective inoculation or not is a personal matter .... one thing that I learned the hard way is the relationship between getting sick with the flu and having Sleep Apnea .... without going into detail the bottom line is, it can throw your heart out of time .... some folks can handle it with medication, in my case it required years of various treatments (including stopping my heart and using the paddles to shock it back into operation) .... it finally put me into heart surgery at Duke University Hospital .... thankfully, that surgery seems to have taken care of it for me .... I learned the hard way just how something like the flu can be when it interacts with other medical conditions

Made my bi-weekly trip to the VA this am. Got my regular hip injection, plus got my flu shot, this after my trip to the lab for the vampires to do their thing. Came out walking upright, so reckon I'll be ok, LOL.
No soreness from the flu shot.
FWIW, the nurse was bigger than me, so I didn't argue with her.

That bout with pneumonia, being on ventilator and respirator is the reason I don’t go anywhere without a mask when I have to go out. In fact Mrs. B is very particular where she lets me go.

I’ve gotten a flu shot every year for the past 20 years. I don’t know if I’ve had the flu or not as I have had mild colds during that period.

2021 UPDATE :

as has been the case for the last couple of years, this morning we drove over to our local Walgreens Pharmacy to get our flu shot .... to our surprise, we had to go back home, get on a computer and book an appointment to get our shots .... that was the case earlier this year with Covid but its the first time we've had to book an appointment for the regular flu shot

I’ve had a few shots of whiskey and will get the whiskey-flu. I’m not sure covid works that way.
