Unbelievable from Weatherby

Post by GunnyGene » Wed Sep 09, 2020 5:26 pm

They call this abomination a "Cowboy" edition. I do believe it is the ugliest firearm ever created. What is going on inside Weatherby that this "thing", ever made it into production? No self respecting cowboy would be caught dead with this - he'd be laughed out of camp. Walnut and blued steel get respect, not some "modern art" pos.

Can't say that I like it either. That is not what I think of when I think of Weatherby. Not even close.

I don't recall ever hunting in a setting where that camo would fit right in .. :? .. while I'm a Weatherby fan, I can't imagine buying one of those

I've never owned a Weatherby. but I wouldn't start with that one.
Maybe they just exhausted all ideas, & this fell out of someone's head.

Good Lord. I am at a lost for words looking at that rifle. You will forgive me if I throw up.

I believe the barrel is even more ugly than the stock and that’s saying something! You know the old saying, “what has been seen........”

Urban Cowboy?
Turban Cowboy, that camo might work in desert brush.

the quotes below, taken from the link provided in post 1, explained some of their thinking

+ Continuing to expand the line of rifles dedicated to their new home, Wyoming, Weatherby has released another custom iteration of their iconic Mark V bolt action rifle called Mark V Cowpoke Edition. The rifle is painted in the colors of Wyoming Cowboys and also has the logo of the football team on the magazine floorplate.

+ The Weatherby Mark V Cowpoke Edition rifle is available in one of the following caliber options: .257 Wby Mag, .30-378 Wby Mag, .300 Wby Mag, 6.5 Wby RPM, 6.5-300 Wby Mag.

+ Like other Mark V rifles, this one is also “guaranteed to shoot a 3-shot group of .99” or less at 100 yards (SUB-MOA) from a cold barrel when used with Weatherby factory or premium ammunition.

+ Regardless of the caliber choice, all versions of Weatherby Mark V Cowpoke Edition rifles have an identical MSRP of $2,499. The lead time is 90-120 days.

I do have two rifles with synthetic stocks, but they are still blued steel. I am a lover of nicely finished walnut.
I consider a firearm as a work of art, and that thing is not good art.
I have fired a Weatherby and the quality was very good and the recoil was horrific! Not for me.

My Weatherby Vanguard had a synthetic stock on it when I got it. It was a great used deal from a pawn shop. Chambered in 30-06 and the recoil was substantial. My buddy got me a Boyd's stock for Christmas and that helped tame the recoil a good bit. Accuracy is decent, but not exceptional. I do get a bit more copper fouling than I would like with it.

I wouldn't take a second look at the one pictured, if I were to run across it in a shop. Well, maybe I would look at it for a while in disbelief. If I got a really good deal on one, I could pretty easily turn it into a decent looking rifle. A new stock and Cerakote and I would have not problem taking it out of the range bag.

understood on the harsh recoil .... out of the box the recoil of our rifle chambered for 300 WBY Mag was horrific indeed .... without making a series of significant recoil reducing mods, I doubt I could have fired it enough to sight it in .... as it is today, if I was ever reduced to a single rifle to perform every possible task, I'd be hard pressed to not keep the 300 .... in fact, we have plans to glass bed the stock and rework its already excellent trigger while we are in Texas in January

I saw this thread this morning and I couldn’t help thinking that pattern looked familiar.

Hmmmm...Cowboy camouflage?...Cowboy...Cowboy...cowboy...

Then it just hit me. When I was younger, I spent a lot of time on the dairy farm. Every so often, if I was crossing a pasture and not paying attention, I would step in a pile of semi-cured dung, the mixture between the crust and the still moist interior looked just like this.

Clearly Siri autocorrected “Cowpie” to “Cowboy” when they were putting together the marketing materials.

The actual weatherby designation is cowpoke not cowboy, even closer to cow pie.
Not my cup of tea but I dont think it as horrific as the marlin dark or henry X models.
Weatherby has always been about gaudy bling so not much of stretch to the cowpoke.
Who the hell thought synthetic stocks fiber optic sights, ceracote finishes flash surpressors, muzzle breaks, picatinny and m-loc rails and cans were just what was needed on a lever action.

I like the tactical look on my tactical guns. My ARs, my combat or Patrol shotguns, even my duty handguns...

I can see synthetic furniture on guns that will see foul wx. Duck Guns, foul wx hunting rifles, military/LE shotguns...

But, for my lever guns, my sporting shotguns (skeet/trap), and high end rifles...
I prefer highly figured wood and deep blue.

Well, maybe I should temper my criticism a bit. A former coach of the Wyoming Cowboys was also the former coach of my favorite college football team the Washington State Cougars. The man is Jim Walden and he is a guy I have tons of respect and admiration for. Great coach but an even greater broadcaster/commentator. He has(had maybe) a Saturday morning football talk show on a local radio station that I enjoyed so much that I scheduled my kindling splitting in the fall to the time of his broadcast. Listening to Jim’s show took the drudgery out of the task. So I guess I should appreciate the rifle for what it represents instead of just knocking it. Now, if it were Crimson and Gray, the colors of the Cougs of Washington State, well that would be a different story.

It’s still hard to look at tho...
