Flip Phones
it appears that yet another era is coming to an end .... yesterday while at our local Verizon store I was told that service for my 3G flip phone will end on Jan 1, 2021 ..
.. according to what I was told, all companies will be ending 3G phone service .... I had no clue that this was coming so, head's up for all of my fellow flip phoners .... the good news is, a new 4G flip phone is available .... other than being 4G, the only difference is the color to the screen background ....

Re: Flip Phones
Ah JE, join the 21st century. My Wife fought it for years saying she would never use an Iphone and if I bought her one she'd take it back.
Try to take it away now and you'd lose your arm.
She said, "I would never text. It's just a time waster". Oh yeah, she texts and does face time with grand kids all the time now.
I know, expensive, but you don't have to buy the latest model.
Go for it. I use mine everyday.

Re: Flip Phones
My wife and I have Consumer Cellular and we have up to date phones but I bought a cheap Verizon flip phone because the signal was better down at my range property....like no signal with the CC. If I drove a mile down the road on the way back home I can then get the CC signal.
My have to change things. For just having a small phone for emergency without swiping thru screens the flip phone hard to beat for seniors!

Ahh those were the days, I had a Motorola Razr, so did my boys, sent it through the wash machine once and dropped onto concrete from a 2 story building and it still worked. One of the boys ran over his with a pickup and still worked. I used that phone until my employer switched us to iPhone.

Re: Flip Phones
I've been told that by a good number of friends but I literally have no interest in owning a "smart phone" .... one issue is their size .... no way I could carry one long without breaking the screen .... when I need one, I use my wife's ....

Re: Flip Phones
I never had even a flip phone until about 8 years ago when I decided that since my wife's mother was staying with us and it would be good to have in an emergency so we each got one. Before that, I hated phones and left the house just to get away from the darn things. Fast forward to today and my wife bought me one of those smart phones for Christmas. I still can't use all the features of it and only use it to call my wife or await her calls if out and about. The stupid thing plays this goofy ding dong crap all day long when the news wants to update me on every protester or drug head killing his neighbor or gang member. Geez, who cares? I don't care if they wipe each other from the face of the Earth. I miss my flip phone though cause it was easy. I still haven't figured out the best way to carry the smart phone because it doesn't fit in a pants pocket without getting sat on and in the front side pockets is just silly. Should I leave my keys and knives home? I ain't going to be carrying a purse to put it in either. I'll leave that to all those funny people who don't know what sex they are.

Don’t worry, they come back in the 24th century and are all the rage at Starfleet. Hang in there.

Re: Flip Phones
The features on one of these things are numerous and amazing, however if they annoy you with notices, adds, sounds, just ask any of your children or grand children and they will instantly fix the phone for you. Don't be shy, they won't laugh at you much.
Also you can take it to the place where you purchased it and they'll do it for you as well.
Also, google or search the web and you'll find any fix you need.
I find the camera to be very useful and it takes good quality pics as well.
I find texting works really well to leave messages when you don't expect to talk to someone because of work or whatever. Kind of like an email, but it's with them all the time.
My Explorer works with my IPhone and projects the weather map on my cars nav system. Pretty helpful.
Naw, I'm not selling them, just think as one gets older they are pretty handy. I just carry mine in my shirt pocket, pants packet, or in a cup holder in my car.

Oh, and while I'm boring you with this, I have an app that controls my hearing aids, the AC in my shop from anywhere, our simply safe security system, IHeart music which gets me news, music, ect wherever I am, and since we have satellite radio in one vehicle, I can get it on my IPhone and connect to my hearing aids or any other listening device or any of our other vehicles. I have a wireless speaker in my shop that connects to it. I can also watch NASCAR from anywhere.
And of course, I can take cute pics of the grand kids and instantly bore my friends by sending them with messaging.
There are so many apps it utterly amazing.

Re: Flip Phones
I have two little great grand kids in Alaska and using Facetime I can call them and actually see them as we talk and they can show me projects
or what they're doing, and they can see me. I love that part. Nope, no extra charge.

Re: Flip Phones
As Minnie Pearle said, I'm all done now.
Oh wait, one more, I can walk around listening to whatever radio or music through my hearing aids and the phone is mute in my pocket, and the wife does not even know.

Cool,I didn't know you could stop those adds and updates. I am always wearing T-Shirts mostly and the pouch that I have to clip on my belt gets in the way of my CC or my seatbelt so the pouch usually stays home.

Looking at your bio on the bottom of the page you look like a pretty resourceful guy. If you have an Apple IPhone, Go to "settings" and just scroll down. You'll find all of them listed and you can just turn them off.
Generic phones probably work about the same.

Re: Flip Phones
Still a dinosaur here, lol. Just have a regular Flip Phone. And I don't give out my Number to anyone, lol. Had Verizon shut off my Text. No Facebook, Twitter or any of the others out there. At home we have a Land Line and this Computer. Have no plans on changing. For TV we only have an Antenna. And my Truck still has a Clutch Pedal. But all that said, I still feel like I'm living in the Jet Age, lol.
