Actually, I called for a label yesterday and it will be back on it's way to the mother ship in a couple of days.

I wound up having the lever pop open a couple of more times, plus I discovered an ugly gouge on the carrier (lifter) that looked like it could eventually lead to a problem loading a round into the chamber.

I'm hoping to get it set for life with the first trip back in, we'll see I suppose. This warranty combined with Henry's terrific customer service attitude is why I bought this rifle in the first place, but it sure would be nice if Henry could catch this stuff before the rifles left the plant. I know that a few "slip through", but this lever popping open stuff has been going on a long time. If they can build a rifle as beautiful as they do, looks like they could fix the design of what ever causes this issue.

Anyway, I was halfway expecting it when I bought the rifle so hopefully no biggie.

midnightrider I think Henry will fix it & fix it quickly. When a company develops a great customer service reputation it really helps in selecting a firearm to buy.

That's what I considered when I bought each of my Henry's, too.

My Big Boy was actually replaced by Henry CS when it became clear that it couldn't be fixed by mere re-working. The replacement rifle has been flawless from day one and for well over a year and many more than a thousand rounds.

Nobody takes care of their customers like the HRAC. Nobody.

Gentlemen, I recently took delivery of my new 45–70 all weather. I was having the same problem with the brass inner magazine tube not fully sliding in and causing the lever to pop open. I quickly figured out the problem. The leading edge of the brass tube (nearest the plastic mag tube follower) is sharp and is catching on the rim of the cartridges! Gently pressing the tube downward while giving a gentle shake to the rifle will allow the brass tube to slide over those cartridge rims and seat all the way down without popping the lever. Henry really should have either applied a slight outward bell to the leading edge of the brass tube or put a rolled edge on it. I hope this solution helps everyone else who buys one of these otherwise fine rifles.

I'm the OP and mine just came back to me from Henry yesterday. The repair ticket said that they had "adjusted the lock-up" and "adjusted the inner magazine tube". We'll see how that works out as far as the lock-up is concerned; I'm hoping and expect that it will be fine. As far as adjusting the inner mag tube, it feels like it may have slightly less pressure on the spring than when I sent it in. I wouldn't be surprised if they had just trimmed a coil or two off the spring to reduce the pressure a bit. I still have to rotate the inner tube as I'm seating it but that has become second nature.

I experienced the same high level of customer service that we have all come to expect from Henry-it's world class! I guess if I have a complaint it's that these rifles get out the door with problems like this in the first place. Let's be honest here: it's more than just a few. It just seems like it would be less stressful on not only the consumer but also Henry if they'd spend a little more time with each rifle before shipping it. But again, I kind of expected it when I bought the rifle and knew they would take care of it.

A little better manual would also be helpful. I discovered the inner mag tube rotating trick from one of their online videos, but not everyone goes to the trouble to search out and view those videos.

In any event, all's well that ends well and I still love the form factor of this rifle and despite many comments to the contrary on other forums I think it's a very nice looking piece.

no matter what we purchase, we tend to want to pay the lowest possible price while expecting it to perform flawlessly .... with Henry, as with all other manufactures of all types of products, they have to deal with a balancing their price so that a sufficient number of people will be willing to pay for them to stay in business and make whatever profit they deem appropriate .... the quality of the product falls into that same consideration .... double the price and I have no doubt that they can afford to spend a bunch more time on each rifle but doing so will most probably put them out of business .... from what I hear about their current competition (Remington Marlins), Henry has come up with a very successful balance of quality and price .... I have no clue what percentage of their rifles have the issue of the lever popping open but I suspect that its fairly small .... I can only go by history .... when they had what appeared to be a significant issue with the locking slot for the magazine tube, they did a major redesign and recall .... I have no reason to believe that they wouldn't do the same for any issue where the the cost of repairing becomes significant .... given, I don't see it has a major problem because ours works perfectly .... if it develops the problem, I'd probably see it a bit differently .... as repeatedly noted, I have no doubt that if ours develops that or any other defect, Henry will take care of it

And that, in a nutshell, is the absolute bottom line as far as I'm concerned.

The first time it happened to me close to a couple years ago with a new .30-30, I panicked a little and returned it immediately to the dealer. This time, I somewhat expected it based on a lot of reading but I didn't care because I now knew Henry would take care of me no matter what. This to me is the ultimate peace of mind. You can't do better than that.

I've had similar experiences with both Glock and Ruger (although Glock isn't always so pleasant to talk to, depending on who you get) but Henry takes the cake. Plus, if you want an 18.5" barrel outdoor carbine, who else makes one? Except of course Remlin, which I wouldn't purchase on a bet!

EDIT: By the way, I also had them install a new carrier since the original was gouged pretty badly. I had spent a fair amount of time cycling the action to break it in and hoped they wouldn't do anything to mess up the great broken-in feel, and they didn't. But has anyone ever felt a smoother action right out of the box?
