I just got off the phone with Evan .... he's undergoing the infusion of the new antibiotic as this is being typed .... he is as upbeat as ever and we are making plans to go out and eat with him later this evening .... we sure hope this one takes care of whatever variety of bugs that are causing his infection

Prayers for a speedy recovery. I know a guy that went through this exact same thing but with a knee surgery. It took a while but they got him straightened out.
Just have to find the right drug to knock the infection out. I went the other route with my knee surgery and had a blood clot. Sometimes it seems there is no winning

As always, thanks for all your good wishes and advice. I'll take everything I can get!

The good news is, for all of this, I feel pretty darn good and the hip pain is minimal. BUT, there's something going on behind the scenes in the bloodwork that the docs don't like, so we'll keep swatting away at it until we get it under control.

Back to work at Parks and Rec this afternoon. Looking forward to seeing some of my co-workers and Parks' "patrons" as we call them.

Wow. Hang in there ESquared. I went in 2 weeks ago and got the diagnosis that it’s up to me when I should schedule my R hip replacement. Now I’m thinking I may just push it out a little longer (and still healing from the Rotator Cuff surgery).

Praying you get well soon!

Thanks very much. Rotator cuff is notoriously difficult in terms of recovery under great circumstances, so getting past that is probably a good idea.

However, don't let my crazy story make you fear the hip (mine was the Right as well), as they're one of the easier joints to do, both surgically and recovery-wise. I wish now I'd done mine about 5 years ago.

Hope your shoulder continues to do well for you!

Well, I officially have (or had?) a "Culture Negative Infection," which is Doc Talk for "we can't figure out what it is." Nothing EVER grew in the lab from the pre-Op and surgical samples they took.

My Infectious Disease Doc says he might see "two cases per year" like this, where clearly the body reacted as if it were infected, but nothing was ever pin-pointed as to cause. Kinda like where we started, with WAY <1% chance of this outcome.

So, even though he doesn't know what he's fighting, and even though all my bloodwork is coming back looking very normal, he'll be keeping me on the Daptomycin for another 3+ weeks, to be followed by oral antibiotics for a couple more weeks.

All of which is fine by me. Had it been MRSA, I'd be looking at a complete re-do, with a much more complicated course of treatment, none of which is pretty; "life-changing" is the way Dr. Sawbones keeps referring to a total hip replacement do-over.

So, for now, it's onward and upward with "better living through chemistry"!!

Evan,
Let's hope this, like Covid just goes away eventually. I do think of you often and hope and pray that this gets resolved. Sounds very peculiar, but glad you are feeling ok!
