Magnum primers...what load to use?

Post by fortyshooter » Mon Aug 17, 2020 9:37 am

Well due to the primer shortage and me letting my supply get low. I have a thousand each of Winchester Small pistol Magnum and CCI 550 mag primers.
Saving what I have left of WLP primers which isn't much. So have read about some folks seeing no difference when using Unique powder but some difference with Alliant 2400 powder. Don't know about Red Dot. Started reading a great article on Loader.com about a good test of powders if forced to use mag primers but of course you have to pay 35 buck$ to subscribe to read the end of it!
Some of you folks have been reloading longer than I have so any personal findings about using magnum primers with Unique...2400 and other powders?

Until things ever get caught up in loading supplies it is what it is! I picked up the two packs of magnum primers cause that's all my LGS had available at that time 2 wks. ago. Now it's just rifle and shotgun primers.

Forty I havent done any testing of one against the other. But the only caution Im aware of is when reaching max load area it may effect pressures. But Im sure you know that

I don't know for sure but I hear second hand that Unique can be spiky up at or over max loads and it doesn't need the help of magnum primers either. I also heard, second hand, that you can use mag primers but reduce your powder charge by a couple grains. The key word is " heard second hand" because as you very well know, there are a whole lot on internet experts.

I was just over on24hourcampfire.com and they are having this very discussion. Most report no issues, just work the load up, maybe dropping powder charge. What with the primer shortages right now seems shooters are trying different angles.

forty, in the "Ask the gunwriters" section. If you've visited that forum, you know what to possibly expect. This one seemed good so far.

that has pretty much been my experience .... my 44 Mag & 357 mag loads both call for Magnum primers ....the only 38's I load use a very light powder charge and I can't tell any difference between loading them with regular or magnum primers

Forty, did you check the primer discussion at the other place? It's actually a pretty good thread.
