High Noon Shootout
High Noon Shootout
I've been wanting to get my Henry Big Boy and my Marlin 94 (both in .45 colt) out to the range, but I've been super busy. Well today I was walking past the gun safe and heard old Henry telling J.M. that, "THIS SAFE AIN"T BIG ENOUGH FOR THE BOTH OF US!" Old J.M. quickly replied, "Well, let's see what ya got big boy!"
So, the time had come.
It was an open sight showdown with 4 shots each at 50 yards. Henry was wearing a Skinner Peep Sight and J.M. was sticking with the traditional semi buckhorn. You be the judge.
My Ruger Super-Redhawk was itching to show its stuff too. So I did 6 18 yard shots with it too. The rest of the night was spent shooting steel where Henry, J.M. and Ruger made up and had a lot of fun!
The last pic. is my ugly mug (perfect for a wanted poster!) with my new chest holster.

Re: High Noon Shootout
Looks like a tie between the rifles! Nice shooting too! Wish I could have been out today but way to hot. 100+
What was your load? That is one beefy looking Ruger holster!!

My deer hunting load, 19 grains of 2400 with a 250 grain xtp. It was beautiful up here 70 and calm. I had no problem shooting with the skinner peep sight, but the last time that I used semi-buckhorn sights I had good eyes. I found tonight that in order to see the front sight on the Marlin I had to shoot with my reading glasses on.fortyshooter wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 7:22 pmLooks like a tie between the rifles! well executed .... your load clearly works well in both rifles .... just curious, any plans for a similar test at 100 yards ..

Great work with both rifles, but especially with the buckhorn sight. Love what you did with the SRH, too. That's always been one of my favorite 44 mags to shoot.

Re: High Noon Shootout
Have you tried 20 gr. of 2400 with that bullet? I have a few boxes of the 20 gr. load but had not tried the 19 gr. load.Greyhawk wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 7:37 pmMy deer hunting load, 19 grains of 2400 with a 250 grain xtp. What was your load? That is one beefy looking Ruger holster!!Might put a peep on that too. the chest rig is called a Kenai chest holster from Gunfighters Inc.
It was nice to get out, its been a while!
Only have shot them in my Ruger Alaskan and SBH Bisley and I need to get those out again.
I have another box of the 250 XTP bullets and plenty of 2400 so might try some at 19 in my Henry Carbine.

Re: High Noon Shootout
I have used 20 grain and really liked it. I just noticed that sometimes the brass was 'balooned' a bit with the 20 grain load and it made me a little nervous (maybe it's not a big deal). I get nice results with the 19 grain load without noticing any deformed brass. If I remember right I think that I noticed it more in the Winchester brass and not so much in the Starline brass. but I've been using the 19 grain load for quite a while and I'm happy with it. I do really like 2400 for the magnum loads and the Hornady 250 XTP is hard to beat in my opinion.fortyshooter wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 9:04 pmHave you tried 20 gr. of 2400 with that bullet?
